Hello,
I am (was?) hosted with WebHost4Life since many years with MS VPS account...
(http://declic-video-fx.com/language/en-US/DNN.aspx)
Unfortunately, WebHost4Life has been bought by another company, and
we have been asked to migrate to a new plateform (more info here)... The migration is
currently pending (for more than 1 month in my case), and so far I was
not able to run the DNN website on the new plateform.
Unfortunately, after spending hours with the support to try solving the
problem, I am still alone with my problem and unable to migrate to the
new plateform. That's a pity, the service was great, but now it is just
unusable for DNN.... :-(
So if anyone has a similar experience or idea, I am willing to try
something. Either staying with WH4L if there exist a solution, or
migrating to a new company ??

I am looking for:
- semi dedicated hosting (with dedicated app pool)
- same price range (50 $ / month)
- 5 Go storage (currently using 2 Go but should stay in this range)
- Maximum 200 Go traffic per month
- Email functionnality (Smarter Mail or similar) with at least 100 alias and multiple email account (10 is ok)
(currently using 60 alias, 5 accounts)
- IMAP mandatory
- SMTP Server relay (no limit, or reasonnable limit, like 100 emails/hour)
- 2 DB and 2 domains
- Each DB with a limit of 300 Mb minimum (currently 50 Mb per DB)
- possibility to connect to the database remotely with the web (MyLittle Admin or similar)
- possibility to manually backup the database and to restore it (option for automatic backup is an advantage, backup to be downloaded manually is perfect)
- possibility to use FTP, 10 accounts (using currently 3 accounts)
- 301 redirect www.domain.com to domain.com
- Fast response time (no slow DNN please...) !!

Hi DV,
Man!!.. I've just had a read of those changes and although I knew it was changing, I was unaware that they were no longer going to use Smartermail. This is a bit of a nightmare for me. I no longer use WH4L for webhosting but I do use them for email and have nearly a hundred domains hosted with hundreds of accounts. I'm going to have to contact them to sort this out.
As for your problem there, what is the actual problem? Your DNN site will run on their new platform, but probably not with the IIS7 defaults. You'll most likely need to have 32bit apps enabled and the application pool running in Classic mode.
I have a dedicated server at Server Intellect now and migrated everything over from the VPS at WH4L. The biggest problem was module activations, one of which delayed the migration for more than a week.
What is your actual problem and I'll see if I know the answer.

Thanks for your answer, I feel better (and not alone anymore !!), by speaking with someone who understand and know what DNN is !!....
Well, that's very easy, I try to migrate my website on the new plateform, but it seems that people there do not know DNN. They claim that they can not help with DNN. Last time I ask a question related to the database, they informed me that my website was not working because there were no default.htm page in my website and created one !... You see what I mean ?
Anyway, I am used to this with the old team, and I progress slowly, but I am not blocked because:
- I am unable to restore a database (the system is buggy, each time I have an error that I report to them and they claim that I need to ask them to restore the database...)
- When you create a database, then delete it, then create it again, you can not modify the password (otherwise, there is a kind of cache system which prevent you from login with the new creditential
- When finally everything is in place, I have a machine key error:
Server Error in '/' Application.
Configuration Error
Description: An error occurred during the processing of a configuration file required to service this request. Please review the specific error details below and modify your configuration file appropriately.
Parser Error Message: It is an error to use a section registered as allowDefinition='MachineToApplication' beyond application level. This error can be caused by a virtual directory not being configured as an application in IIS.

Additionnal information:
- they just restore my database (I can not do it)... :-(((
- I have now a running application and working (but slow)
- MAIN PROBLEM: ALL MY IMAGES need to be corrected for the paths...
The path used to be
/Portals/0/Images/Image1.JPG
Now, it looks like I should use:
FOLDER-WHERE-DNN-IS/Portals/0/Images/Image1.JPG
That's crazy, any idea ???

Hi DV, sorry for the delay. I didn't receive any notifications from the thread, but I've just now checked the subscribe box so it should be ok.
You really need to know how to use IIS Manager to manage websites and application pools. Does your new account provide remote desktop access to the VPS, or does it all happen through a secondary interface?
Each website visible in IIS Manager points to the root folder of the application. It appears as if the DNN install has been placed in a subfolder of the website, rather than at the root. This would cause the problem you're seeing.
Let me know if you have proper remote desktop access to the server.

Well that was exciting.. I've managed to delay the automated destruction of my email services at WH4L, giving me some extra time to set up my own server and migrate everything onto it.
But the real excitement came today when I received an email saying that the migration had been done.. I nearly died.. what migration?
On closer examination it turned out to be a ten dollar account I had opened to run a few php sites last year - I had closed it months ago. I had however also noticed that the previous WH4L people never actually deleted the account.. I can still sign into it even now. Whenever I sent them an email about this they just said it will be deleted automatically after the invoice is not paid.
Well now it has become a brand new account on the new owner's system. So I signed in, opened a live chat to get them to delete it and that turned into a classic nit-witted support call where first they woudn't talk to me because I didn't have a secret question for an account I didn't even have. Then they kept pasting in generic responses, then they kept telling me they had no records of the deletion - because they had no records from the old host... and it went on and on. Then he vanished for a bit and all of a sudden said - your account will be deleted tomorrow.
So I asked what finally convinced him and he said "You're welcome! Is there anything else I can help you with?". I just left.
My take on the matter is that old Eric at Webhost4life inflated the sale value of the business by not deleting closed accounts.
The old VPS I had there was pretty good but the rest of the place is a joke, I'm glad I'll finally be out of there!
DV - I'd advise to start looking around, even if they get your site working. You need to be in a safer environment. The trouble with DNN is that safe is ultimately only on one's own server.

| To be fair, the only bad thing about PowerDNN is the limited disk space available unless you pay for more. Other services and specs are A+ |
