Hey Scott,
This has been mentioned in another thread I created here:

The difference with this being it would be a simple previous/next in order of posting. For a News-type website, if a user wants to page through the "Current Articles", once they are in an article they must go back to Current Articles, select another article and repeat the process. (unless I'm missing something) So if a user wanted to read a few new articles, they might get to the first article from a Latest module, go back to Current Articles, go to another new article, go back to Current Articles, go to another new article...etc
I would simply like people to read through the "Current Articles" from one article to the next or previous with a link that can be put at the bottom of the article. This would make the module much easier to traverse when you are simply going through the most recent "News".

Hi Steve,
This has been discussed before, there are a few difficulties.
An article has a unique url, I am unable to establish how they got that url, e.g. email, current articles, category view, author view, etc. So how do you determine what the next article is? You could always assume the current articles sort order, but that might be misleading.
An option to pass an argument tot he view article page on where they come from is possible, but it also causes different urls for the same content.

Hey Scott,
I think I'm confused, but what I am saying is order them as they were put in the database. If you have 5 articles, say they're 1-5, if you are on 3 Previous would be 4 since 4 is older, and Next would be 2 since it is newer. If you move to 2, Previous would be 3 since 3 is older, and Next would be 1. If you move up to 1, there would be no Next since it's the newest entry, and 2 would be Previous.
Wouldn't you know the URLs for the Prev and Next in that case?

I don't think ordering based on the database is appropriate.
The current articles isn't ordered on that sort order.
My question still remains, if they come from the category page, wouldn't you expect to page through the articles based on category? This is the difficulty, because an article has only 1 url and it is difficult to determine where they came from.
So the only option is to use the sort order of the current articles, but this is confusing for the above mentioned reasons. |

Hey Scott,
It would be nice if the user could page through based on category, but the Current Articles order would be better than not having any paging at all. The majority of users will not enter by category, but by the Current Articles or a Latest Module that is a representation of the Current Articles so the paging would, in most cases, make sense.
Maybe there is a way to hide paging if it comes from something other than a Current Articles or Latest articles listing?
I understand that it would be nice to have it work "perfectly", but IMHO paging through articles is a standard function of reading news, which arguably makes it a feature that should be core to the module.

| Looking at the wordpress blog, they always use date as the sort order. We could always use the sort order and filter settings that have been configured for current articles. |
