Heh, you need to give me at least 24 hours to respond sometimes :)

Currently it's not possible, but I'm open to suggestions on how it should be done, (seperated by comma?), how would that change the select user screen?

I'm sorry,
I didn't meant to be rude...
I do really appreciate your module and more in general this website.

About the select user screen, I believe it should look as a web mail. The magnifier window can maybe includes a checkbox beside names to make multiple selections.

A semicolon symbol should separate the recipients. At source code level a Split would be enough to separate the recipients list.

Thanks for your answer

No problems, :)

So when I select compose now, I can hit the magnifying glass that will take me to a screen allowing me to browse for a user that will return me to the compose screen with the send to populated.

Your saying that screen should have checkbox's? What if that user isn't there any requires different search criteria to find?

I checked my webmail, but it wasn't much help, as you can select people from your address book but that's about it. I'll look at around at some other PM systems and see how they do it.

Hi,
following how my webmails are implemented...

www.libero.it
I've checked my mailbox, and when the user requires a different search criteria, it loose the actual selection. I can add user with the same criteria at once.
I can add users with different criteria opening the users dialog twice or more. The result are appended to the Textbox each time.

mail.google.com
It works using full javascripts and inline address book (autocomplete). Not a good example for us.....

company webmail (based on Horde3)
My company webmail use a dialog with two columns and buttons like >> and << to add/remove recipients (like the one in outlook). This example is different from your solution and requires to restyle completely your address book dialog....

I believe the first solution is mostly good for start. It can be improved in future adding such a basket at the bottom of your dialog.

Hope this helps

Thanks again for your good work and availability in supporting us! :)
Best regards

Yes, I think the "Find User" selection needs to be improved.

I checked with some forums, and they just allow you to type in the username seperated by a ;

Would your users be smart enough to know who the usernames are? Or should there be an improved find user?

Hi,
thanks for reacting so fast...

actually this is a strong requirement for my company needs. Indeed I would appreciate to have this feature also without any improvements to the Find User dialog. The improvements are maybe not needed if the result of the selection is appended to the actual value of the Recipients. The user will open the dialog one time for each user. In case of a wrong selection he will (hopefully) be smart enough to clean up the Recipients list, respecting the ; separators.

The improvement of the Find User should be a future improvement not necessarily related with this point.

Best Regards

Ok, I'll see what I can do, i'm conscious of users who might make a mistake in selecting a person, then wanting to cahnge the send to, they may end up sending to both when what they want to do is replace.

I may just re-work the selection.

This issue of sending to multiple user at once is a feature we need. Our old forum/pm could do this and ppl are nagging me about it. I've tried separeting users with , ; > space etc. non of it works.

Is this implemented yet?

Thanks

Scott,

I think that this feature is really necessary. Here are my thoughts:
  1. The method of selecting multiple users: adding a small link "Add another user" below the "Recipient" field. Clicking this will open another address row. This can get messy if we are sending to many users, but it'll make things less complicated than using a single address row with commas.
  2. Make a personal address book for the PM module. When someone sends me a message, I can (optionally) add him to my address book, so I can find his username more easily. Moreover, it'd be nice if we can send a message to all users in the address book.
I do hope to see these features in action.

So am I reading this correctly, as of now the admin or moderators cannot send a private message to all registered users at once?

Actually, they can. You can configure who has the permission to send bulk messages to a particular Security Role in the Settings page.

I am confused. On the http://www.ventrian.com/Products/Modules/PrivateMessages.aspx page it has a link to send list. but then I do not see info about it. I have private messages Send List 01.06.04 installed. On my downloads page I see Subscription Tools. Which tool will send messages based on roles?

=========

the ability to send to all users in a role has all the suddenly become critical for us. we were using the bulk email feature, but now we realized that all of these individual portals do not need to be portals, because the only admin access they actually have is the bulk email feature. We are in the process of creating fake portals. Simply by pointing a subdomain to a regular page on the site. such as Group33HomePage. then all the pages linking from this page are viewable by role Group33. So we can get rid of all the portals and keep all the "fake sites" on one installation. I am not sure if this will work but bulk email feature is a site specific feature.

I would like the Group33Admin Role to be able to send to Group33 Role. However I want to do this behind the scenes since I do not allow Group33Admin to ever see roles.

I previously did this in the bulk email by just hard coding "Registered Users" in the BulkEmail.ascx.vb file ( objRoleNames.Add("Registered Users") and the I hid the roles and put a message on the page. To: All registered users will automatically be included to recieve an email

Do you have any suggestions of how I might be able to do this using either the Send List or Subscribtion Tools? I have purchased the source code. One way I was thinking of this is to use Viva Iframe to set the users role as queary string in the url and I could write a get quearystring as the pages loads and insert the user role this way. But I am not this far.

Private messages allows you to send to a group, the main private messages allows you to do this, it's something you need to turn on in view options though.

that was easy!

I created a new page and put a new instance of the messages module on the page but when I click the magnifying glass
to select the entire group I can a 404 error page.

PrivateMessaging/tabid/741/pmType/FindUser/Search/%20/Default.aspx

instead of /PrivateMessaging/tabid/741/pmType/FindUser/Search/allan/Default.aspx

which works within in the smart-thinkers profile module.

Can the messages module have more than one instance on a website?

Where do I configure the search page for the messages module?

I am having the same problem that webmonkeymon is having.  If I leave the Send To User textbox blank on the Compose Message page and click the magnifying glass I get the following error.
