So in updating News Articles, I have come to a cross roads for a few decisions, so I thought I would ask for feedback.

Firstly, here are the upcoming features.

* Article Templates [COMPLETE]: customisation of current articles, view articles etc

* Email Templates [COMPLETE]: customisation of emails that are sent out (similar to this forum)

* File Attachments: configurable file attachments to attach to an article

* Links: configurable links to attach to an article

* Related Articles: select articles to "relate" to an article

* Localization [COMPLETE]: All admin screens to be localized, you'll have to modify the templates for your own locale.

*
Realignment [COMPLETE] with the core modules in look + feel (admin
side of things), admin options has this already done to it.

So here are the decisions to be made:-

1.)
Should the 2nd level of the menu
(Submit/MyArticles/Approve/Categories/Admin) appear in the dropdown
menu (based on role) rather then at the top of module.

2.) When
clicking an article, categories, search, syndication,  should it
load into its own screen (a module loaded by itself). Similar to the
way you edit an announcement in the announcements module, it is loaded
into a page with just that module.

Pros: This allows for a module to appear many times on the one screen and not effect each other.

Cons: There
maybe some movement between screens, especially if the front page
appears half way down a page, when clicking on a link, the article will
appear loaded by itself at the top. This may not be too much of an
issue with templates because you can really begin to mix things up. The
question would then be, by clicking on current articles would it take
you back to the original page, or just stay with the page loaded by
itself.

3.) Should the screens that tell a user "thank you for submitting an article, you can now?" be removed?

I'll post more questions as I think of them.

No!    Rather not have my users needing the learning experience.  When it's in plain view for them, it's easier!! And quicker...   Why use the cool ass iDrive feature in a BMW when you need three clicks to turn on the radio?

2) When clicking an article, categories, search, syndication,  should it load into its own screen (a module loaded by itself). Similar to the way you edit an announcement in the announcements module, it is loaded into a page with just that module.

Tough question... I personally don't have an issue with needing the module on one page more than once. (even though i tried once!)  i like it loading into it's own screen, since everything else stays where it was.

3)  Should the screens that tell a user "thank you for submitting an article, you can now?" be removed?

Going back to the default page listing articles would be fine for me.  I never use the links that get displayed.

4)  Should a featured article show " - Featured Article" in the title?

A "featured article" might not always be that special, but needs to be sticky sometimes anyway...   with templates, perhaps make this easy to take off for those who don't like it?

I think its fine as it is.  Users become used to it and it allows
quick access to these features.  Additionally, users who are able
to submit articles, may not be used to using the module actions
dropdown and so would be unfamiliar anyway. As long as it doesn't take
up too much space then I think its great (perhaps a collapsible menu
bar??)

2.)

Sounds like the way to go, for consistency.  If users are familiar
with this behaviour in other modules then perhaps to best to follow
suit in this case.  I don't see much point in showing other
content on the page at the time -> the user has indicated that they
wish to focus on this article/functionality, by clicking on the related
link, so why not dedicate the screen space for this purpose.

I think either a 'BACK' / 'RETURN' / 'MAIN LISTING' / 'CURRENT
ARTICLES' button is therefore very important and should be quite
prominent after completing the action. My preference is to return to
the main listing.

3.) Should the screens that tell a user "thank you for submitting an article, you can now?" be removed?

An option to retain this for flexibility would be nice, although my
preference is to return to the main listing, as stated above.
Simplicity is important in our particular environment, but it may be
different in others.

Keep up the good work Scott, and thanks for allowing us to provide this
type of feedback to influence your product. Much appreciated.

Cheers,

Andrew

Everyone of course has their own needs... I'd actually want the other content still showing on the page, mostly for advertising purposes, and quick access to certain links I'll have strewn around.

So if the page was templateable (common theme here lately), then I could include all the little controls and links and whatnot on the page.

Otherwise, how it is now would work better for me, with the least amount of work. Admin selectable option perhaps?

I'm creating a standard function that urls are formed from, so there will be an admin switch to load it like it does now, or in a seperate screen.

1> Bonosoft MultiPage allows the Titles to be moved Either at the top, or to the side.
I think this is very functional.

Yes, I mean moving the menu options from above, over to the left side.

1.) Should the 2nd level of the menu (Submit/MyArticles/Approve/Categories/Admin) appear in the dropdown menu (based on role) rather then at the top of module.

I think that the top menu should be hidden. I find it difficult to compress the article onto pages where space is an issue with the large heading. I agree that the drop down method is a little awkward for users though. Maybe if we could edit the template to show or hide the individual headings with tokens? That way you can show the individual menu items, and where-ever you want them.

2.) When clicking an article, categories, search, syndication,  should it load into its own screen (a module loaded by itself). Similar to the way you edit an announcement in the announcements module, it is loaded into a page with just that module.

I think I am fine either way
3.) Should the screens that tell a user "thank you for submitting an article, you can now?" be removed?

I never read these, so I would say yes.

Hi Scott,
This may already be a feature and I missed it, but if not, I would like to have the option to set links in news articles to open in new windows;

target="_Blank"

without having to hand code each one.

Great modules...thanks.
