Hello Scott,
It's been a while since I've posted here. Last I checked, there were some statements made by you (or something you wrote that seemed to suggest) that there would be some major work done on News Articles.
I was wondering if there was a timeframe and what priorities you had on the major rework?
From what I've gathered, many people would be interested in:
- A modular 'Create Article' page that hides/disables certain options & fields from being displayed or accessed. This would be ideal for sites whom many people access or contribute to that do not have Administrative rights, etc.
- Tags and a more in-depth method of sortation/categorization of articles
- Gallery functionality per article, providing the ability to upload images, etc. A good idea would be to limit the amount of images with a variable specificiable by the Administrator.
- Since NA will be taking a step to have a modular 'Create Article' page, it would be nice to have a cohesive profile system that could show posts by the author, and provide statistics, etc. I don't see the core DNN team working on anything in the short future at all, so this might be the solution rather than outsource the use of another developer's module (Rodney's or otherwise).
Just something of a personal preference: It'd be nice to have the ability to set compression settings for both a thumbnail and the enlarged version and also specifying the rezise dimensions. If the original uploaded image was 1024 x 768, it would be interesting to somehow have NA make an enlarged version that maintains within a boundary an Administrator has set for an Enlarged version (perhaps a max width of '500') similar to how NA currently does with thumbs. Compression settings would be nice as I find the thumbs currently set to produce to much artifacts. I would rather eat up bandwidth than sacrifice for quality as I have bandwidth to spare.
I'm still quite gung-ho on the use of News Articles and am reall edging towards the system expanding. I'm looking forward to hearing your thoughts. Many of these were on my personal development request work I inquired about months to over a year ago..
I'm sure others would be willing to donate as well, but you have my promise of a 3 digit donation if this work may be prioritized somehow for the near future.
Cheers |

| Gallery & Files will be part of the news articles. You can attach multiple photos and multiple files rather then just singular. The gallery will be viewable and templateable in a lightbox. |

Hi,
I'm very interested too in the possibility to have an image gallery attached to an article...any news about the new version availability?
Thank you very much in advance,

I have also been wondering about some of the features brought up here. While all of the features first mentioned are important to me, the top two are: #1 - subcategories and/or tagging with the ability to search more specifically than the current system allows (search in "Category1" & "Category2" at the same time). #2 Author profiles - at a minimum I would love to be able to have a list of authors that do not have to be a user on the site. A more full featured author profile system would be great as well. Scott - Can you give me any hint of the likelyhood for either of these two features being included in any updates to NA in the next month or two? NA is the main module I need for a couple of sites and after trying a few other modules I have found yours to be the best. However due to the size of the article databases for each of my sites my clients require the ability to categorize and search at a more granular(specific) level. |

#1 - It will be tags. #2 - Yes, this will be supported The new release will be out this month. You can expect tags to be similar to simple gallery, and author profiels to be templatable extracted from core profile fields. A single article manager interface will replace many of the other screens. |

That is very good news for me to hear! Now I know that your module will fill the needs of two important projects I have and I will be renewing my membership which is about to expire! :) I would've renewed anyway since I am going to be creating another site for a property management company soon. Thanks for your excellent work. I suppose I should look at the simple gallery module to see how you implement tagging there. I just need to know that searching will allow for multiple tags to refine a search. One last question re: search in NA. Will the core search issue be solved which currently prevents search results when you have multiple instances of the same NA module? This would be great if possible. Thanks! |

Scott,
Will this release be built around VS2005, or are you still continuing on your VS2003 track?

| Scott, it would be nice if your modules were aware of your other Ventrian modules. for examle, #2 Author profiles -- it'd be nice if i can link my news articles author name to a property agent type. for one customer i'm using the property agent for a member directory. so i modified the source, added another token, got my news artice author name, looped though property agent properties to match my news article author name. but it's ugly. |

We've had requests that have been piling up for well over a year now.. My subscription has run out to the site, but I'd be looking for a full subscription renewal when there are vast additions being taken into account that the community has vouched for or desire. Some of the things mentioned here are one of many. Tags, profile enhancements, etc. are some of many that the community has long looked forward to (in addition to many others).
I love the work Scott has done for the modules.. In fact, I envision my site mostly only needing Scott's modules for the majority of the functions, but not much has drastically changed since I've joined the site and no new large additions have been made for quite some time even though demand has been evident.
I'm hopeful that something may materialize soon.. When News Articles sees some growth and fulfills some of the larger demands sans bug fixes, etc. and actual additions, I will be renewing my subscription to the site and would be (as I've always offered) more than willing to donate (you have my word on this). I'm a faithful to the site, and as a News Articles devotee, truly hope that something could be done to give this product some new life. Bug-fixes are definitely a priority, but I hope future updates can provide more and provide us with some new and interesting additions.
Some things to look ahead for:
- Advanced Profiles with NA/Ventrian Integration. Some discussion can be found at: http://www.ventrian.com/Support/ProductForums/tabid/118/forumid/4/postid/26952/view/topic/Default.aspx
- Tags are a priority. It may even help alleviate that long sought sub-category system.
- Modular/Customizable 'Create Article' page custom to particular user classes.
Thanks again for listening to the community. Time is definitely the killer on these things, but I hope you can find time to consider implementation on some of the voiced requests.. Many of us are looking forward to what you have in store! =) I want to clarify to Scott as well as others.. I am not a disgruntled customer. I love this product, and only hope that it can continue to evolve. My impression of Ventrian as a brand is a positive one.. They listen to the community, evolve their products and curtail them to consumer needs, and just overall, Scott and everyone else here are great people.
My hopes for some new additions to transpire is nothing but a testament to the brand that Scott has made. Hopefully (crossing my fingers) we can get some new stuff soon!
Cheers,
Danny |

Hm, hm . . .
Since Scott is excellent programmer and really nice guy who (unlike the others "big shot" developers) always do what he said that he will do, my impression is that we do not have to put pressure on him to speed up.
It is obvious that NA change and improved version is ahead and we have to consider his time and efforts in "upgrading" all of his modules to .net 2 (Although I'm not very happy with option to gain better modules only if I upgrade my DNN to +4.5.5).
And, further more, our trust in him and his work must not be questioned by subscription renewal. It is question of ones morality (or wealth).

| The main focus has been on property agent in the last 3 months. With a release of ratings/comments (any day) and pay-per-listing, this will close off enhancements for a while and allow me to focus more on news articles which will incorporate these enhancements. |

Scott, In case I missed it, is there a way to integrate the article pages with the DNN breadcrumb? Is it even possible? Lance |

| Not without developing a new breadcrumb skin object. The core one queries only the hierarchy of tabs. |
