I don't think so- at least not yet...
The topic has come before though. Check out THIS thread.
Lots of discussion and great ideas! |

I think many of us is waiting for Sub-category as it is on top of the Feedback list for awhile now :)) . Currently it is quite impossible to implement a decent 'Property Listing' unless you can enable Sub-categories.
Again thanks to Scott for a great module ... It will definitly be worth the waiting !! |

| It's been a good, almost one year in the waiting for this.. Hopefully something can come to fruition soon enough. |

We've talked about this before, in regards to multiple categories vs hierarchical categories. It is difficult to have both.
Moving forward, a common theme in web 2.0 and vista seems to be tagging as the preferred method of categorisation.
If tagging were implemented, would this be a better solution? Tagging would be an extension on multiple-categories available today, but with the ability to also specify new tags when creating an article. |

Hello Scott,
I believe tagging is a good solution. I've actually had a suggestion about this before as well, but in terms of archiving articles, I'm not sure how tagging can help resolve this. If anybody has any ideas, feel free to drop them in. But yes, I do believe that this will help tons (tags). |

| I was referring to how tagging will not help archiving.. Some people may physically want a sub-category under a parent category, so tagging will not resolve this issue. But nonetheless, I think tagging has a place within the system regardless.. It should be an excellent addition, and I personally, will make use of it. |

I have to admit, I would like to see both. Tagging is great for alowing the author to enter their own set of tags. They help with search, and act as an ad-hoc categorization.
But, they don't replace categorization which is good for allowing content to be filtered in a standard way for displaying articles around the site.
As for Sub-Categorization, that is definitely a good addition for the organizing your data around the site. I guess I'm wanting both. But please do NOT drop categories.

| Regarding Sub-categories – will this be extending to CUSTOM FIELDS too ? eg I would like a list of Suburbs as sub-categories of a State |

| I think the only way to apply it to custom fields is to make a special custom field type. |

If you create the special type called 'subtype' for example then you have to allow the user to select from a dropdown list the existing types in order to make assign the subtype to a specific type.
And in your setting you should have the choice as to how many subtypes you can create... that would be a great feature, it opens the possibilities of the application.
