Hey, how can we go about doing something like combining the image gallery with the articles module? I would like when users clicked on an image it would have a light box pop up similiar to how the image gallery works now. Basically something that will let us use images from the image gallery and insert them into articles, so 1 place to store the images and use the effects...

I probably haven't gotten all my thoughts together, so sorry if it sounds like rambling... Its just some sites I have seen have a click here to see a larger image of this thumbnail and it would be nice is that could linkup to the simple image gallery.

If you just want to have an image use the lightbox effect, you can go here to get the script.  http://www.huddletogether.com/projects/lightbox2/

Yes, you could use the [IMAGELINK] and put the lightbox scripts in to get that effect. But this would only work for 1 image.

Ok look how these guys are doing their articles:
http://www.firingsquad.com/games/frontlines_fuel_of_war_preview

Do you see if you click on a picture the image gallery pops up? It lets you view all the pictures in the article; and most people only want to see pictures also.

Someway that when you create an article, all the images go into an album with the article NAME. This way you can integrate the 2.

Also some very needed features are:

"CLICK here for a print freindly version of the Article" [Entire Article, including all Pages, DNN just has module print]
"CICK here to email article to a freind"
"Click here to BLOG" On DIGG, BLogger e.t.c. you have seen these everywhere...

Also a jump to page would be nice as well.

This is something I have been hoping to see for a long time now (article-level galleries).  I have tried I-Framing a gallery, but it's clumsy and not very effective.  I've used the script mentioned above to pop an image, and although it works in limited capacity, it's not very efficient for more than a single image, and not worth it much for just that..

That said, seeing how a mini gallery was so beautifully implemented in the Properties Agent Module really made me salivate.  If there were a way to do exactly that with an article... I would be in ecstatic!

There is a [PRINT] token but currently it just prints out the current page.

You could add the blog button, etc, but I agree, it should be part of a template. I really like the finance articles on yahoo as a template, and the "author" sections.

The real trick would be to change the article creation process to work as an optional multi-step and then allow you to add a gallery.

It might be difficult to add a gallery similar to the article you pointed out, as it appear they have been inserted in different sections of the article by the author.

This is an oldie but a goodie. I was checking out this article:

http://cxmagazine.com/more-interbike-cross-goods-tires-frames-shoes-and-more

(about cyclocross, something I do when I'm not working) and thought "man this would be awesome to combine News Articles with Simple Gallery and have a lightbox effect." Super cool for articles with product reviews, etc.

I know you could achieve this with code from lightbox2....but it would be nice to make this simple for users to just upload photos with captions into news articles. Then you could use a token to place the images (either in the NA template or in the content itself).

Bumping this one up a little. Here is another great example of relating a gallery to an article.

http://www.velonews.com/article/84595/kona-luna-dominate-day-1-in-louisville

Scroll down the article and check out the gallery at the bottom of the page.

I think this would be a great addition to your modules.  It could even just be aome sort of simple tag connection between the tags on the article and the tags in that gallery.

Would you need access through the text editor to place the photos inside the content of the article? Like the new active forums does?

That would be pretty cool. However, I'm mostly interested in relating content like images to articles. (Actually, there is a larger concept for me if using NA as a "discussions" module and then relating content to it. Not a replacement to a forum like AF...more of profile or group discussion concept in a social networking site).

But, putting that aside for now...I think connecting the gallery to the article would be cool for things like product sites. If you could then choose photos from the related gallery to place iwthin the article that's just a bonus.

I really like the idea tags relating to photos, also if there could be "related articles" token based on the most relevant tags, that would be really cool. To me it would work so that if there isn't a specific photo assigned to an article it would automatically associate a gallery based on tags. That way it could be a simple template that wouldn't need to be changed, and if the "specific photo" option is used it would display that in the [photo] token - otherwise it would a photo from a gallery with related tags.

Thanks,
Steve

Scott,
Here is a concept you may consider. What if the SG could be used (in addition to it's current purpose) as a photo repository for site members. MyPhotos like facebook, etc. I could upload photos and tag them (more on tags in a second).

Then, this photo repository could be used when writing an article. So, to take Will's concept in AF further...there would be a single instance of SG where all users upload their photos. Then photos are either related to content (like in NA) or displayed in a filtered view (My Photos, Group Photos, Friends Photos, etc)....based on how users get to the photos.

There just seems to be a big opportunity to use SG and NA in Social Networking sites and with only a few additions I think it would work very well. Essentially, a groupid stored alonside authorid (for group photos or group articles/discussions) and a companion modules to display photos or articles based on a passed in userid or groupid

I know I'm getting ahead of myself and perhaps ahead of what you plan for SG/NA but the simplcity of your modules is what makes them so powerful. Opening them up beyond News and Galleries would be likely expand your position in the market.

Lastly, while we're talking about tagging. It would cool if you could begin to introduce some tagging features along the lines of facebook. Where I can choose form a list of groups, friends, tags, etc and tag a specific area of an image. Again, we could then use these tags to related user contributed content back to other users, groups and articles.

OK...now my head is spinning.

Or even something like nesting an album in an article.  I've seen something like this on a couple newspaper web sites.

I'm working with a web site that has articles about high school sporting events.  Each article has a group of photos associated with it.

Another useful feature would be somehow linking photo tags to an article (or vice versa).

Yep. Album embedding would be great. There are a lot of News Sites out there which presents this feature.
It could be so easy ... Just a new Token like [SG:Name] for Gallery: Galleryname and the Gallery is embedded.
Maybe a few more parameters to layout size, behaviour or something else.

In combination with (hope coming soon) Related Articles it would be a powerful News Module from Hobbyist to Professional.
