What is everyone's preference on having more modules or one module such as "Latest Articles" that is more configurable?

I need to add two pieces of functionality:-
  • Archive Module/Listing, displays the months (clickable) with the
number of articles for that month. January 2005 (10), February 2005
    (4), etc.
  • Category Module/Listing, displays the categories (clickable) with
the number of articles for that category. This is kind of already done
by the categories page, so is this really necessary?

So what I am asking is, should they be seperate modules? Or maybe
archive should be just another link next to "current articles",
"categories", etc.

Why not have both.  I like the idea of an Archive with a Blog type of look.  Plus having a separate module for display using the calendar for location wold be great.  I don't know that I would limit it to just archived articles.  Why not allow for the calendar information to be used with both archived and other categories?

I agree, my only concern was making the module list too big

For those using News Articles as a Blog (which I suspect is a growing number of us), it would be great to see a separate module that shows a simple Calendar (which allows month forward/backward navigation).

Each day in the month that has articles would somehow be hilighted, and clicking on that day would cause the primary News Articles module to show articles from that day.

This module would support various "view modes"

1.  Month List (from your original suggestion, with number of articles in each month)
2.  Calendar (as indicated above)
3.  Tree (Month+Category)

Ideally, the module would also support navigation to a separate Tab/Page within DNN so that the "summary module" (or whatever you call it) could exist on a different page from the core News Articles module.

Would love to think through this further with you.

Ah yes, I like the view modes, that is a very good idea.. now just what to call it, "Archive Articles", "Articles by Date?"

Hi
Personally I prefer working with one module for all, since I don't want users to mess around with too many modules. If a site has a lot of modules available it gets messy to administrate.
I feel the parts as they are now are the best balance between the need for modularity and clean work space.
Anyway, whatever the decision is, I hope you'll find a way (Isn't it just a convention policy?) to put some different naming convention then it is now. In my tests the two modules (lists and articles) has the same DNNForge name in the available modules list which makes me guess what am I installing.

bump!

We could really use these features right now (along with an option to hide all Navigation links to non-admin users)

any news ?

There will be a new release in a few days that will contain the archive type module. You can configure it to list articles by month, category, etc.

Eventually, we might get rid of the top links altogether (once supporting modules do that functionality), but for now, I'll add a config option to hide it.

Wow, archiving, can hardly wait.

P.S. Is this the FCKEditor I'm using? How is it working out?

Any chance on a calendar view still?
