I would like to have an option in NewsArticles to generate a Google sitemap. Each article should be listed in that XML file. This is really needed to help Google find all the articles because it does not crawl very well inside NewsArticles.

In addition to this the XML file should contain Friendly URL's because Google does not crawl:

  • Don't use &ID= as a parameter in your URLs.
  • If you use dynamic pages (for instance, the URL contains a ? character), be aware that not all search engine spiders crawl dynamic and static pages. It helps to keep the parameters short and the number of them few.

  • Your not using the friendly url solution inside DNN that removes the ? parameters, this was the purpose of this enhancement. Most modern search engines will search dynamic pages however, but at a slower rate so they don't overload the server.

Is it one google sitemap per site? I thought it was supposed to list your entire site's index, what about forums, etc, then?

Yes. It is one xml sitemap per site.

The automatic sitemap creators that I have seen for DNN only create an entry per page (tab). I find that most of the value of my site comes from articles and blog posts. Since I use your news articles module for both articles and blogs, that's all I really care about. I have plans for a forum, but that is not on my list for inclusion in a sitemap.

Google will search beyond the sitemap eventually by following links on the pages in the same way it would if you didn't have a sitemap, I just like to give them a headstart on my articles by including them in the sitemap.

I added this as a suggestion for a new module, but I would imagine it would become complex quickly due to competing needs and the available parameters.

    Cheers.

It should be fairly simple to build, I think the real trick will be the articles that are "filtered" on multiple pages. Should they appear on multiple pages?

I do my sitemaps by hand now. I only put in entries for the main tab/pages and for the permalinks to the article detail pages. I don't put in entries for archive pages, category pages, or other dynamic filtered pages. I want my visitors on the main page or in an individual article. I don't know how much my use model matches those of others.

The more advanced features to a sitemap module come in being compatible with other modules or being able to add static pages, repress pages, or change the priority. Wordpress has a great plugin for generating flexible sitemaps you can find it here: http://www.arnebrachhold.de/2005/06/05/google-sitemaps-generator-v2-final.

    Cheers.

This would be a highly beneficial add-on, and in my opinion, is pretty integral considering, as some users have poitned out, Google does not properly crawl the News Articles pages, and my site is pretty much relying it for every single article I will have. We're talking 100's.. and within a half year, definitely well over a 1,000.

Hopefully something can be implemented to create an effective Google Sitemap.

I'll see what I can do, I definately want to improve my own page rank for this site, I heard you get +1 for having a google sitemap? Does anyone know if this is correct?

You don't get any pagerank benefits from a sitemap. However, I do find that your pages find their way into the index much faster.

The only way to improve pagerank is to get good quality incoming links.

I need to correct myself from an earlier statement: a website can have more than one sitemap xml file. If a website has more than one sitemap than it helps to have a sitemap index. The help section of the Google Sitemaps website has good information on this.

Hmm, multiple sitemaps could work, you could then have 1 for the main DNN navigation, and the 1 for each news articles instance.
