Smcculloch.net now works offer a minimum donation for access to all modules and all source code contained on this site.

Q.) Why have you gone this route?

I’ve decided to move to this route so I can spend more time actively working on DotNetNuke. Previously, my full time work has taken up a lot of time, add in core work for the latest version, and then there is not much time for my own modules.

So I’ve decided to switch to part time at work, and spend that time creating modules for users of my site. My goal is to one day do this full time.

Q.) So what’s it going to cost me?

There are three different levels of membership. Each membership listed below contains the same list of features, just differing ways of subscribing (Host) or duration (Gold, Silver). The list of features is:-

* Access to all modules & source code
* Access to all skins & source code
* Access to all skin objects & source code
* Access to a member’s only forum, for prioritized answers.

Host Membership

Host membership is designed for users looking for a web host. By signing up with one of the best value web hosts around (webhost4life) and using my referral ID of 'smcculloch' will automatically entitle you to 1 year of access to this site.

Webhost4life offers plans from as little as $4.95 a month including free installation of DotNetNuke! I use the $9.95 plan on my site because it contains SQL Server. To learn more about hosting with webhost4life, click here.

To sign up for Host Membership:-

Use my referral ID of ‘smcculloch’ when signing up at webhost4life.
Send an email to smcculloch@iinet.net.au including your webhost4life username and your smcculloch.net username.

After I receive the email, I’ll add you to the correct role so you gain full access to all modules, skins and skin objects.

Silver Membership

Silver membership is designed for users who already have a host, and are looking for short term access to the smcculloch.net site. For example, a short term project.

For minimum of $20 donation to this site, you gain access to all of the above features for 3 months.

To sign up for Silver Membership:-

* Register an account with this site.
* Login with that account.
* Click on your username to edit your profile.
* Expand membership services
* Click “subscribe” link on the silver membership role.
* Follow the paypal prompts for payment
* Once payment has been made you will be taken back to this site, and should have access to all downloads.

Gold Membership

Gold membership is designed for users who already have a host, and are looking for long term access to the smcculloch.net site.

For minimum of $35 donation to this site, you gain access to all of the above features for 1 year.

To sign up for Gold Membership:-

* Register an account with this site.
* Login with that account.
* Click on your username to edit your profile.
* Expand membership services
* Click “subscribe” link on the silver membership role.
* Follow the paypal prompts for payment
* Once payment has been made you will be taken back to this site, and should have access to all downloads.

Q.) I’m having problems seeing the download pages?

The download pages are now located with each module, if you still cannot see them, contact me at smcculloch@iinet.net.au.

Thank you for your support!

The membership model is interesting, and a clever idea to use the WH4L referrals as one way to gain membership. Everyone wins because most people need a host.

My only (small) reservation is that I feel that people starting out with DNN need a good reservoir of completely free modules to get going with. As they use these they will become confident enough to build good sites and look at buying other modules.

I know you already do a huge amount of core work and also contribute free modules like UsersOnline so that comment is not aimed at you!

Quick question - are the links at top right of your skin a new skin object? I am upgrading the magic modules tab link but at the mo it only allows tab ids as a defined link.

Cheers
Nick

Nick

Just a reminder to everyone that if you sign up for Silver or Gold, you are getting everything that Scott posts for 3 months of a year!  That means that as many modules as he can churn out are yours for what you will spend for one module at snowcovered.com (which is still a good place to buy modules).

As for the need for free modules, there is still a lot of free stuff out there to get you going.

Let's support Scott, as we really need full-time guys putting out high-quality stuff like you see right here on his site!

Thanks Bruce - yes the aim is to produce many high-quality modules at a low price and the more susbcribers means the more time I can put into development of new/existing modules.

Gotta say that I really like the News Articles module and have been using in on the two not-for-profit sites I donate to kids soccer charities.  Unfortunately, I need to update my site to DNN3 and those modules which were free will now cost me to upgrade.  I already donate my time and lots of unreimbursed costs like many developers, but all the update modules are breaking the bank.

I certainly appreciate the position you are in, but one of the reasons for the DNN concept is to provide as much content for free under the open source initiative.  The more developers that privatize their offerings opens the door to other platforms, etc.  I guess my point is that once you release a module for free, it's a bit frustrating to have to pay for an upgrade.

Just venting...

I take your point, thats why I provided the option of the webhost4life route. I figured most people would want a place to host a site. (unless they get it for free also).

The other route is the core team option, which not everyone can be part of, I wanted to reward the people actively committing to the project.

The last point is the cost, i tried to keep it as low as possible, rather then charging for individual modules.

Also, when I was offering all the modules for free for DotNetNuke 1.x and 2.x, I had very little time to spend on the modules themselves. I would work a full time job, do core team work, and my modules would become a distant third. So going part time was the only way to provide my modules in 3.x as I was exhausted from regular work

What are your plans for upgrades to modules due to bugs or DNN version after a membership expires?

Just a question: Are memberships upgradable? If i paid for 20 box for 3 months, can I upgrade it to 1 year by paing the 15$ difference at some point along the way?

Thanks

If you manually contact me (smcculloch@iinet.net.au), we can arrange this.

This reply is to Jeff who was mentioning his donated soccer league sites above...

Jeff,

I also have a couple of sites that I "donate" to organizations who otherwise couldn't afford to have websites, as even the minimal costs can add up.  Here are a couple ideas that I sometimes recommend to defray the cost of the sites:

1. Ask for permission to place a paypal "donation" link on the home page.  However, it's important to make it perfectly clear that the donations will be going towards the maintenance of the website... one of my organizations actually has 2 donation links (one for website maintenance and one for donations to the organization for uniforms or equipment or whatever).  It's not a bad idea to have a "thank you" page on the site that acknowledges the website donations and avoids any perceptions of impropriety.

2. Ask for permission to add a reasonably visible "Sponsored by JeffsWebsites.com" logo to the homepage (after all... soccer parents are business owners too ).  One decent contract because someone thinks you're a nice guy who sponsors kids can go a long way.

3.  Offer some fun products for sale to help raise funds for maintenance.  CafePress.com will let you create mugs and tshirts and hats with anything you want on them... they have a base price and you can add a couple bucks to each item which they send to you.  There's no minimum order and there's no inventory -- they just print one up when an order is placed.  It's never going to make you a millionaire, but people love tshirts with their organization's name on it (or an inside joke or something), so it can help to pay for a module or two.

Hopefully we can all find some creative ways to continue providing websites like this, while at the same time supporting the generosity and talents of people like Scott who certainly give alot more than they get.

Good Luck!

D

Hi Scott -

I am considering a membership and just want to be sure I am reading everything correctly.  If I sign up for a 3 month membership I am entitled to install any of the modules on your site as well as use them beyond the 3 month subscription period?  Is the only restriction that I will not have access to upgrades beyond the 3 months?  Sorry for the redquest for clarification it's just that when something sounds too good to be true it usually is :)

dcurtin,

That's exactly right, however, you _will_ renew at the end of the three months because Scott offers so much that you won't be able to resist the upgrades.

Scott's a top bloke too and has a great attitutde towards his customers, there are very few in the DNN arena who are as well regarded as Scott, you won't be disappointed.
