I know this has been requested twice in the Feedback Center (PLEASE VOTE) and I'm sure many times in the Forums.

http://www.ventrian.com/Support/FeedbackCenter/tabid/265/fbType/View/FeedbackID/397/Default.aspx
And i've even contacted you directly and tried to get this sponsered but communication always stopped at "...okay how do I pay you?"
I'm going to post this once a week until this feature is added. You can ban me, kick me off the forum, cancel my subscription...I don't care if it gets this function added to SimpleGallery.

Wow, hard to believe another week has gone by.
Cool new features have been added to SimpleGallery, except for one that every other Gallery module I use has...can you tell me what that is?
I wish I didn't love everything else about SimpleGallery so much... |

eklug, can you describe how you ideally want it to sort on the screen? We now have edit photos that changes photos on a page to be editable, would it be a "sort photos" link that allows you to reorganise it? How are the images displayed? Just as links? Small thumbnails? Please contact me at sales@ventrian.com if you want to sponsor, this is not difficult to implement. I am sorry for the delay. |

I would suggest possibly a "Sort Photos" link from the "Edit Photos" section. I would like to see a table listing of images with a small thumb and possible UP and DOWN arrows and/or AJAX drag-drop ability. Another idea also might be to add the ability to send the photo to the absolute top or bottom of the list. Table data would be one record per line (for example): [THUMBNAIL] - [PHOTOTITLE] - [SORT_CONTROLS] Still allow your initial sort option to work unless the item(s) have been manually sorted or does not have NULL in the possible Sort field. |

Couldn't the tagging grid be used for this sort of thing? I always assumed that there would be up/down buttons for each image there. That's unless there is some way to put up/down button on the image thumbs directly in the gallery.. a "sort in place" method - I'd be concerned about spreading gallery editing functionals across too many different pages. ultra Media Gallery has this issue. There is of course the issue about what happens with the other sort methods when manual sort is used... would manual sort become an additional method on the sort drop-down or would it permanently override any other method. That tagging page would be even cooler if one could also delete images there. Rob |

Here are my thoughts on the subject:- 1. When you go to edit an album, the album has 3 options for sorting:- a. Inherit – inherits sorting from the module settings. b. Auto-sort – provides the administrator an option to override the default sort for that particular album c. Manual sort – allows the administrator to manually sort photos and provides a link in 2 places:- i. When listing albums on the page, an icon that will go to the sort screen. ii. When viewing an album, a link next to edit photos for sorting The problem with putting it on Edit Photos, is this shows many other views, such as viewing a tag. We could always display it when viewing an album and ask the admin to turn on manual sorting for the album as well. I like your idea for the table data, with move to first, previous, next and move to last. What do you guys think? Of course the sort controls could be directly on the view album screen as well (where it lists the photos). |

Are you saying the could be movement arrow buttons like "to start, forwards, backwards, to end" right there on the thumbnails page? That would be by far the most intuitive. The more "edit in place" things can become, the more logical it becomes for the user. Some questions arise... Would it be problematic when the thumbs are broken up over many pages... would the moved ones simply skip to the destination leaving the page where it was. Could there also be a delete button along with the arrows. What about moving thumbs to different albums. Currently this has to be done by editing each image individually and it's a real time killer when albums grow in size and the owner wants to divide them into sub albums. Perhaps there would be a "send to.. album" drop-down list? I would mainly be concerned about not having too many different places where photos are worked on. Ultra Media Gallery has this problem - it has at least three screens of thumbs for working with images.. all similar but all slightly different.. and definitely confusing for people. And don't get too distracted from News Articles either :) Rob |

For manual sort, we can have the first/up/down/last appear next to the thumbnails when viewing an album, but this does invalidate what I was saying about "inherit", "auto-sort", etc. If the commends are placed directly next to the thumbnails as they exist today, it would imply that it's always user sortable, or maybe even user sortable on the movement. So I think the albums still need to have the 3 options, inherit, auto-sort on these fields and manual sort. What do you think eklug? For the send to option, do you think some fancy ajax would handle this? |

| On a further note, I have been debating on adding some ajax to edit the photos inline without going to another page. |

I do think keeping View views and my Edit views separate is important. I'm a nube programmer, I can just go by what my clients have said and what works good for me. AJAX I feel is at its best when used in tables for drag-drop sorting. My fear is too much clutter on the View pages and how that would affect designs when "edit" is clicked and the grid table has to expand. Though, only having one view to edit/sort/view does sound appealing. My suggestion is to get this feature into the product as described by you, Scott, earlier. You can always, I assume, change the Views later as people vote and good ideas come up. Just my meandering thoughts. |
