I am currently running DNN Version 3.0.13. When I
tried to install the core forum I got an error. I posted asking for help
in the ASP.NET normal forum but didn't get a response. I assume that
something in the PA isn't working with that version of DNN.
I see that several people including this site use Active Forums. It looks
like there is a fee associated with it but I really don't mind paying that if
the forum is worth it. Can anyone provide any feedback on Active Forum
and the advantages of using it instead of the core forum?
Also while I have you. I am currently looking for someone to build me a
customer skin. I have the mock up image but just need to turn it into a
skin. Does anyone know somebody that does that and how much something
like that runs?
I really appreciate everyone’s help. Since I started using DNN I have not only
seen how powerful it really is but am happy to see that there is a great
community of people willing to help each other.
Thanks,
George

Hi George,
The core forum is still in beta and ActiveForum has been around since DNN2, so if you need a solution today, it might be better.
You could try nina @ www.xd.com.au, she should be able to build your skin.

As far as skinning goes, TrainCert.net has a wonderful video that walks you through a skinning session. I am not a web designer (just a lowly programmer), but found that I could do wonderful things with some simple templates. If it is involved, then definitely hand it off, but give it a try yourself, first. You will enjoy the learning experience!

I would have to agree with Ling.
I thought it would be scarey, but the skinning experience is almost painless...and quite interesting. If you're starting out, I would recommend playing with the HTML skinning, as the ASCX can be a bit more confusing. |

| You will not be disapointed with Active Forums. It is well worth the money. If this is a professional site I would not even consider the core forums at this time. |

I just purchased ActiveForums 3.0 for DNN 3.1. So far I can not get it to run correctly. Will is looking into I believe. What happens with mine is I keep getting a "Critical Error forum unavailable" has something to do with the input string not in correct format for date time. I have checked all the local, timzone, host timezone, admin timzone, deleted cookies nothing is working. The who's online is set up correctly but does not work consistently either does the stats.
The forums will show up but if I go into a thread and back out I get the "critical error forums unavaliable. I have to hit refresh for the forums under the group to show again and sometimes that dont work. I notice in the log viewer that it is happening to my users aswell.
I also get alot of double post's.I have installed all the latest patches from Activemodules.com-3.0.5 and 3.0.6 < on his website.
Anyone had this prob and figured it out ?
Thanks |

I used it for a little bit. It was a little bit more simple for users to use.
What I would like to see is an easy mode hosts could switch on --
sometimes users are overwhelmed with options and just want to put a few
boards up.

Like Scott, I haven't had any problems with AF on the two sites I'm using it on. I'm running 3.1 with, I think, AF 3.0.5. Hadn't heard that there was a 3.0.6 version out. I'll have to check out Will's site.
Could you give us a bit more info on your setup/configuration? |

I have it narrowed down to the date/time formatting options. I changed your site back to the default settings. I checked the error log a few minutes ago and didn't see any errors since I made the change.
Thanks,

Thank you everyone for your responses. You definitely convinced
me to go with Active Forums. Once I get my skin in place I will be
purchasing it.
I had a friend of mine help me out with the skin. He got a basic design
together for me. You can check it out by going to:
http://www.greeklosangeles.net
I have a couple of questions though.
1. If you notice between the left pane and content pane there is not
spacing. How would you add in spacing between the modules/panes?
2. I don't like how the left pane expands and contracts based on the size of
the content in the pane. Is there a ways to set a max limit on the width?
3. How can I add extra space between the modules and the header where it says
Register/Login?
4. How can I add extra space between the sides of the modules and the border of
the page?
5. I honestly love the Venture Skin but wanted my logo across the top and it
centered. I would have used it if I would have been able to do
that. Anyway is there a way to add the same type of left hand sub menu to
mine. I like how it gives the extra links and that it shows that page
that you are on?
6. Also on the main page of this site there are modules in the content pane
that are side by side. Is there something special that you have to do to
allow modules to be side by side?
I tried to contact Nina to see if she could help but didn't get a response back
from her. Any other suggestions?
Thanks,
George

In the venture skin, I surrounded the columns with a table added padding.
2. I don't like how the left pane expands and contracts based on the size of the content in the pane. Is there a ways to set a max limit on the width?
A common trick is to place a 1px high and Xpx wide spacer image to force it to the same width all the time 3. How can I add extra space between the modules and the header where it says Register/Login?
Modify the skin and maybe another spacer image, or change the line height on that area. 4. How can I add extra space between the sides of the modules and the border of the page?
Padding from item 1 should do that 5. I honestly love the Venture Skin but wanted my logo across the top and it centered. I would have used it if I would have been able to do that. Anyway is there a way to add the same type of left hand sub menu to mine. I like how it gives the extra links and that it shows that page that you are on?
If you have the venture one installed, you should be able to drop the skin object in there as well (make sure you have styles too). It's called [VENTURELEFTMENU] 6. Also on the main page of this site there are modules in the content pane that are side by side. Is there something special that you have to do to allow modules to be side by side?
I modded the venture skin to actually have 2 extra content areas. So it's left pane, middle pane, right pane, and 2 extra panes, middle left, and middle right. I can send you the changes if you like..

Ben It should be relatively easy, when moving hosts,
you take a copy of all your dotnetnuke files and backup the database.
You can then restore your database on your new host, with the newly
copied files. Then update your connection string and your good to go.
WSS can assist you in the transfer, they are quite good with support.

Scott, I have downlaoded the files for my site and zipped them up.support as websecurestore says to zip up both the site files and database.Well I can not figure out how to get a copy of my database off of my existing provider so that I can zip it up,to upload to my site.
I have enterprisemanager and can access the db to my site from it.but when I do a back up, I can not find it.
any thoughts on this so that I can zip up the db and ftp up to my site so websecurestore can install for me ?
Thanks
