Does anyone have any documentation that might explain the ideal set up for a DNN installation on one server?

I'd like to know how many portals I can pull from one database without causing server problems or slowdowns. Should there be only one site per install? Does each site need its own server? Does the database need to be on a separate server?

I thought I read somewhere (a forum thread maybe) that explain where some people were able to have 100s of sites off of one installation - all one one server. What is the suggested setup?

This is more hardware related than anything. If you have the hardware that can handle the load one installation can hold hundreds of sites for sure. Each case will be different and based on the application for the installation. It's also an issue of common sense. If it makes sense to have hundreds of sites off a single installation becasue of the ability to share data between portals then do it. If the data needs to remain segregated for the user, then do that. Give it a go and see what you get!

I got contacted recently about a guy running 54 sites on 1 install and was having a large number of problems.

I think it all depends on the traffic + hardware as Jack has stated.

How many do you have running Jack?

Interesting. Does any of this information exist in some kind of documentation? I'd love to know what the ideal setup is for larger sites/installations.

We are contemplating 1 install for at most 6 sites, with the potential for 2 to 2.5 million hits per month. I do think the sites would be better if the data was shared, which is the reason why I think we should do 1 install. But I want to make sure the installation is done correctly and efficiently to handle the potential traffic.

Depending on how technical you want to get, you could follow this topic by Shaun Walker:
