| Scott, would you tell me why you like Active Forums compared to the forums module that is included with DotNetNuke? I am interested in hearing the good and bad of either as you see them. |

I've been using Active Forums for quite a while (before the DNN Forums was available too)
The main reason, is that when I depend on a module as much as the forums, it helped to have someone that could answer my support queries (and was accountable). Early on, the DNN forums had a large number of bugs, and only started to stabilize once in use on DNN.
The other reason, is that Will has a knack of adding a continual set of features to the module without making it too difficult to use. |

It is looking like I need to switch to ActiveForums. An important feature that my users like is the avatar. Phpbb where we came from worked well and gave users many ways to identify what they liked etc. We are unable to get the user part of avatars to work in the module that ships with DNN and apparently a number of other people have this problem too. And the issue seems to be ignored on the support forum. I have few other problems with the module. Sometimes it works and sometimes we get error when the page is loaded.
Have you ever used phpbb2? How does ActiveForums compare to it?
Do you know of any scripts to help with migration of phpbb to DNN/ActiveForums? google on the subject of moving from phpbb to DNN does not provide a lot of information.

Now Available: Conversion utilities to migrate from Adverageous and DNN Core Forums. We also offer conversion services for Snitz and phpBB. I got that of the Active Modules home page. http://www.activemodules.com/Default.aspx?tabid=48. It looks like they have taken care of most of the migration headaches for you.

I have used phpbb as an end user, and without a doubt it's very good.
Active Forums should be a suitable replacement, but keep in mind it's a module add-on to DNN, not a complete contained system like phpbb, so some things it might rely on DNN to do. |

Actually phpbb is nothing but a forum. There are just a ton of mods out there for it. I realize that all the things we did with phpbb are not going to be available in the dotnetnuke world... yet. No reason ActiveForums cannot get there in future IF they will take it there.
I am willing to pay for modules if they will do what I need. And since I have some experience with VB I am hoping I'll be able to write the special modules that I cannot find. Write them or get my son to write them :) I would rather spend time with the other aspects of building this site than programming...
I purchased ActiveForums last night. I went with the subscription service. I've opened a case with them about importing phpbb but so far they've not responded :(

Dale - I brought my users over from phpBB and haven't looked back.
I had written a VB.net application to pretty much move it over in a semi-automated fashion. If you're adventurous, I can forward the material on. |

I wrote this code over a year ago - so be warned that I am almost unable to answer any questions as to the work.
I've posted the files up to a folder on my mail server. I posted an rtf file that has an overview of the method (as posted up to the ActiveForums site) and then a zip file that contains all of the code in a VB.NET 2003 format.
Hopefully this helps you out! - Cliff |

Does anyone having trouble when clicking MY POST in the DNN4.3.5 Core Forum? It show this error on my site: ------------------ Server Error in '/' Application. ORDER BY items must appear in the select list if SELECT DISTINCT is specified. 0
Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. Please review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code.
Exception Details: System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: ORDER BY items must appear in the select list if SELECT DISTINCT is specified. ------------------
There are 2 posts in the DNN support forum for the same issue but no one had a reply yet ! see http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Community/ForumsDotNetNuke/tabid/795/forumid/7/threadid/78403/scope/posts/Default.aspx |

| Hi Glen, this is a core forum issue, I'm not sure. This thread is about "Active Forums". I can only suggest you might need to be running the latest version? |
