OK, lets get everyones thoughts on requirements for a Simple Calendar module.
Here are the things I can think of off the top.
- Recurring
- "All Day"
- Milti-Day
- "Add to Calendar" - by event (vcal etc)
- Mass Import (csv)
- Mass Export (csv)
- Print (See http://www.bigfoot-software.com/)
- This is a nice module already, it's missing the mass import export functionality
- Categories
- Locations
- Master Roll-Up
- Selectable Roll-Up
- Private Public by Role
- Would need to be an "Advanced" type option
- Multi-View List, Month, Day
On the "Can and should this be done?" list....
- RSS - XML
- Would be very cool to be able to access calendar information from a feed. Today, next 5 days, next 30 days.
- A "Desk-Top" connector of sorts
- Could be very powerful to have some kind of "Outlook Connector" or Desktop Version that would keep in touch with the web calendar.
Features for a completly different (and also desperatly needed) module....
- Booking
- Reservations
- Event Registration
- Subscriptions
- etc.........
The interface IMO should be a close to Outlook as possible. Very simple and straight forward for adding events with the more complex recurrence settings and role assignments expandable.
I am looking at this from multiple angles the "Enterprise" type of environment where you could have several calendars for an organization with editors of each by role and the individual controlled environment where a single user controls a single calendar.
I'm sure I missed something, but it should be a good start.

To add to the list of items, how about a group function?
This would be of use for business or personal. For personal, you could
have a group of family members that can share a common calendar. Same
goes for work, by department or location, etc.

| Curious: Was there talk about such a module, or is this the opener on the subject. I would certainly love to have a good calendar. All of them to date are either overkill, or lack the common functionality needed. |

What I have found that is a great group/event calendar is http://www.mychurchevents.com/ It has almost every feature I have looked for in a calender that the current DNN ones do not have (of course for my church). Mainly for me showing the time of an event in the month view, event reminders, a selectable list of holidays, multiple views that are seperate(Month, day, etc). The only thing it lacks at the moment is importing and fexible skinning and being a dnn module of course. I think this is a great example of a simple calendar to go by. |

This is the thread to discuss ideas of the Simple Calendar module, as
discussed with Jack, it will most probably emulate the functionality
available in mychurchevents (as linked above).
The idea is to provide a simple calendar module that covers basic
calendar functionality and most of all focuses on a simple user
experience.

Adding my comments from another thread:
This has been on my list for quite awhile as well.
I need very much to replace the cities asp web calendar.
One thing I am looking for is the ability to have a master calendar on a page, but also have the ability to filter by Category (or in my case, department) using a dropdown.
A nice daily or weekly List view would also be a nice option.
One issue I have with the AVCalendar is that it doesn't create the Database entries for the events.
Instead it saves the repeat event parameters. This save DB size but makes it very difficult to make individual changes to an instance of the repeated event.
My old calendar does the opposite. Repeating all of the event data for each instance of the event.
I am working on calendar that will save one instance of the Event Data, and then save the event Times/Durations etc in a separate table. I think this gives the most flexibility, in terms of database efficiency, size and easy updates.
Right now I have the Stored procedure that will add the event based on the repeat parameters. |

I looked at the MychurchEvents Calendar.
It looks nice. One thing that could be added is that the Dropdown List that allows you to filter could
be changed to allow you to Check more than one Category.
Admin could also let people decide whether the filters would persist for users or not. |

I already have my own custom calendar I made on other open source ones so won't vote for this one. But I will make a couple nice suggestions...
Email Reminders - not many(or any) dnn calendars do this so this would be a nice feature
Event List Module - A separate module that you can put anywhere and it lists all the events. This would be a nice one to be templated.
But, anyways, I already have my own custom calendar so would prefer Scott works on other stuff & that this one never gets written! |

What is the status of this? We could really use a good calendar that includes the items listed above. It seems the existing DNN calendar modules each have a few of the features but none of them have all.
Suggested Features In Order Of Importance
- ability to schedule single events, multi-day events, and recurring events
- month view / week view / day view
- ability to create parent and child calendars with customizable rollup
- ability to export to Outlook
- ability to filter a parent calendar to show only a certain child calendar (via a select list of child calendars)
- ability to syndicate via RSS
- ability to include images in event detail
- ability to send notifications to members of specific roles
- ability to register for an event (with ability to limit how many people can register).
- full use of CSS
- fully localized
- ability to use other text editor providers

| No progress yet, things have been a bit slow as I finish a few things up. There is some great content planned for the next 2 months. |

If it would help,
You guys are welcome to use the code I've written thus far for my calendar module (you can see a sample at http://nwa.wowuimods.com/, just click on the 'Calendar' menu item). It's not particularly advanced yet, but it's coming along. |

I love the look of that calendar, great job, especially the upcoming events.
I can't tell you how frustrated I have become with the current calendars available, really looking forward to something new. |

You are right there is a need for the "simple" calendar module but will it stay simple ?
I have tested a number of calendar's and ended up with the one from Smart-Thinker. But as most of the modules made for DNN they dont offer any possibility for a flexible setup. So the optimale module is one that offer selection of fields "turn on/off" as whele as funktions for induvidual needs. |

I have been looking for and Events/Calendar module with an approval process similar to Scott's News Articles.
i.e. allow specifc roles to create an event then allow other roles to approve the event.
All the other features mentioned would be great also. |

Thanks for the positive feedback. The calendar (and the site) is continuing to evolve. I have a planned enhancement schedule for the next month that would allow for sign-ups, subscription to new events, and an approval flow - because everyone wants to be able to use it to make it really useful to the end-user community. One of the things that has been best received by the user-community has been localization of timezone based on the user's profile.
One aspect I'm excited about as well is adding an RSS capability similar to Scott's News Articles, but I just need to get around to coding it.
But I would love to see the code expanded and grown beyond what it currently is - and would be very happy to share what exists (it's in C#, though ) and work with other coders to continue movement forward, or switch over to another one that would otherwise meet my needs. But it only started out of that common frustration voiced here on the lack of current simple functionality among the DNN modules. |
