Scott, if this module could connect to Amazon S3 storage that would be HUGE! We are moving many of our large file (video and audio) storage to Amazon. The price is right and the delivery speed is exceptional. If the file manager module could be set to map to a specific bucket, or better yet a bucket and subfolder in S3 storage that would be awesome.

I would envision the host account being able to set the bucket location and key information per instance, maybe even per portal. The admin would then be able to set the folder location.

Could anyone else use this ability?

It would require the file/folder list to become provider based and a provider written for S3, I don't think it would be that hard, but at least a few days work.

Additionaly, if this module could connect to and display files on external shares on a domain (\\server\share\folderA) it would be head and shoulders above any current module.

Restrictive persmissions on a share (anything other than all domain users, or everyone) would still be in use.   Those shares with less restrictive permissions would use dnn security settings.

Please consider this for us who work primarily on intranets.

+1 to supporting UNC paths! Perhaps even role based access to UNC shares\FileLinks Root.

I've got some code which does it - when I get some time I'll look into it.

I'd add to the voices calling for AWS S3 integration.

Hi Scott,

I vote for UNC path support which would be great.

This could reduce backup database and site file size.

Thanks, Scott.

I guess this is what I'm asking about as well. Sorry for the extra topic on the matter (non-standard file location).

If not this module, does anyone know of one out there with such a feature? Seems a fairly obvious need which someone may have met by now.

I wonder if it would be possible to build an IIS extension that would add an AWS bucket as a virtual directory in IIS? If your AWS bucket just showed up as another folder in your portal, we would have this problem licked. This would be so powerful, any module would be able to store stuff to AWS.

That is a GREAT idea.

Make it so - Number One. From my experience, every time I have a good idea, someone smarter has already invented it, so I am looking. Let me know if you make any progress and will too.

With newer versions of ASP.NET, it is no longer possible to delete multiple files that are located in the DNN root. If we were able to save files to UNC paths, we would also have a resolution to this problem. However, we would need the ability to create and delete folders using File Links. Here is my wish list for future releases of File Links:

Ability to manage files in UNC paths
Ability to manage files in Amazon S3
Ability to create and delete folders
Checkbox token so that we can select multiple files and delete or move them.

These features would be an incredible help to those of us the work a lot with Intranets.

My above idea of making a virtual S3 directory in IIS would likely not work in DNN. DNN file browsing looks at UNC paths and seems to ignore IIS virtual directories.

Ability to create and delete folders
Ability to save to UNC paths
MultiCheckbox to delete

I am a bit afraid of the UNC paths upgrade just because I don't know how you would handle security. I don't think I would want a client to see what my file structure was like and I know I would not want an undesirable user to find it. Do you have any thoughts on this?

Maybe that is just a bad idea and we should do Amazon instead.
