Posted By Scott McCulloch on 8/28/2008 12:55 AM Yep - Rob, do you have a test environment that you could potentially test out the new release for me?
Ok I've got a duplicate set up and ready to test any time in the next 4-5 hours. Otherwise it'd have to wait until morning again. Email me whenever you're ready.

Still playing around with the layout, but here is the new "standard" layout that should look OK on most sites (just using core styles). http://www.ventrian.com/Resources/Articles.aspx The comments will now auto-link, use BBCode ([quote][/quote], [b][/b], etc) and the archives/search page have changed, plus many other things that I won't list yet. |

That's looking good... especially considering that it's using default styles as-is. It might be good for sales later to do a slick version of it as a second template... using more stylish fonts and colours. It'd really only need to be a second css. The surrounding NewsArticles class will be useful for giving people quick and easy info on how to change the styles too. I notice they're all applied as id's rather than classes.. is there a particular reason or benefit in that? I spent 10 minutes just then trying to restyle things before I realised why it wasn't working.. doh. The only thing I'd perhaps suggest is to use consistent CamelCase for all the style names. Good stuff overall I reckon Rob |

| While you're messing around so deeply in this module I should try and throw something back on the radar... it'd be great if rating stars came into the templates, or could be otherwise specified. Getting this module working on my white and my black skin has never been satisfactory :) |

I think your right about IDs versus classes, maybe I should have used more classes where they occur more than once in a page - I'll tidy this up. There is still some work to do on the skin, but I'm getting there. For the ratings, I'll add a check into the images folder of the template to see if it has provided rating images, this would be dependent on the name but should be OK. |

Okay, it's not class based Link Let me know what you think. The styling for the comment form is CSS based, but this causes a problem in older templates at the moment, I'm not sure if it is going to be an issue. e.g. Post Comment 1 Post Comment 2 I've still got some more updating to do in the default template, but it will probably affect other people's templates. |

Very nice!! I am going to wait for this release. One more thing please. Don't forget to allow the users to upload predefined files into the articiles without letting them browse the server. This especially important if someone (me) is using the articles module as a community blog. Thanks for your wonderful work! |

I think there are a few of us that would like to use this as our blog module, it would be great to limit the image size as well... Steve |

Hey Scott,
Looking good. Can you also add a digg button? Currently I use addthis script. If you can digg I can dump the ad this script.
I will be happy to test your module as well if you need.
Thanks,
Tareq |

The last couple posts are talking about a couple of things I think:- 1.) Frozen DNN: The option to allow users to upload images/files into their own "specific" directories. 2.) Steve: The option to resize images on upload? You can already fix this in the module using [IMAGETHUMB:XXX] 3.) Tareq, it is really easy to modify the template to add digg, or any other variation, I can show you how. |

Great, I'll take a look at that - so many features I just don't realize I have! Having each user with their own space is very important for me as well - it's difficult to let users Blog when they can potentially change others' images, not to mention images on the core of the site! It would also be great if you could limit them to "linked" images instead of actually uploading them...
Thanks! Steve |

I think Steve means one of my favorite feature requests... resizing images on upload... not afterwards. It's the only way to stop the server space being used up overnight as people upload images straight off their digital cameras.
I've always thought this needs to be in the core, but as there has never been any buy-in over there, it has to be handled in every module that allows image uploads. |

The latest template still looks good. The surrounding NewsArticles class is still specified as an ID I think... Is that one in the template or in the module itself. |

I can provide some context: The core blog module used to attach image and file uploads strictly to individual posts and even created folders for managing them. This was proper content management as it was both secure and it also allowed posts to be moved and deleted as a whole with related files and images. Then the function was removed from the module, but now it is thankfully making a comeback in the next release. Other modules such as the repository also manage content in this manner... essentially per-user.
I would prefer if all modules worked like this, but News Articles doesn't, and this is also why it doesn't work very well as a blog for multiple authors. It also means that content production to the server is basically one-way.. there's no means of removing files and images at all, let alone figuring out which items go with which posts. (bloggers can't be admins).. and it is also not secure unless one takes the step of creating secured folders for each new blogger.
I know the topic has been brought up in the past (I recall Jack or Buck also being very focused on the need for it), but I'd pretty much learned it wasn't going to be an option for the module.. I've really only detailed the points here again so Steve and Frozen know where the module sits and also just in case it can be brought up again for further discussion or development? Obviously, it'll be out of scope for the current pile of work and certainly for this thread, but maybe not forever?

I am hoping/requesting that Scott "bring it back" in this upcoming release! I think it is so unnecessary that one blogger can access other bloggers uploaded pictures or any pics on the server. It's invasion of privacy.
I agree that the pics should be resized before they are uploaded into/for the blog purposes. I am thinking of something similar as the Active forum does. It allows you to upload predefined pics types and it's size. You upload it and it automatically displays it too. I like that feature. I mean it's so important for a blog too, right?
Scott, please. |

| It's not a difficult item to implement, it just means a user (including admin) won't be able to select any files from the portal, so while it is great for some installations, other users (such as my own 1 user blog) will have it turned off. |

Ah, you're right - I was so excited because I thought there was a way to resize on upload! I definitely want to restrict the space from being gobbled up on the site! Also, *absolutely* with respect to blog images being deleted along with the posts - otherwise you would have a junkyard of wasted space from images that can't be accessed! It would also be great to be able to limit the users space for images - i.e - each user is limited to 20mb of space.
Thanks, Steve |
