I have some readers telling me they can't submit comments to stories because CAPTCHA won't recognize the code they entered. I just tried to post a comment on behalf of a reader and went through eight different codes -- all of which were rejected.

I have temporarily disabled CAPTCHA, but wondered what might be causing the problem. We are running DNN 6.1.02 and News Articles 7.94.

Thanks!

Just tested it in mine (3 DNNs) and works ok.

If you turn captcha on for user registration, does it work? (we just re-use the core dnn control)

Hi Scott,

I turned on CAPTCHA for user registration and used it successfully.

However, when I turn on CAPTCHA for the comments, it is impossible to complete the code. It keeps saying it is invalid.

We got heavy spam from a Russian poster today, so I'd like to figure out a way to better control this. I have comment moderation turned on for now.

Any other ideas?

In an earlier post I read that you managed to block entire countries from posting comments. How do you do that?

I'll need to see if I can reproduce the issue in 6.1.2 -- I use moderation on most of my blogs

Having said all that, I also run a few wordpress instances and on them I use akismet which cuts down the spam "substantially". It is a centralised service for reporting and actioning spams, and like traffic data in the GIS world, the crowd data helps to make it better for everyone. So I have been looking at this. It is free for community sites, but a small fee for commercial (I think)

As for blocking countries, I did that in IIS, you can download a list of IPs for specific countries

I turned on moderation just before I posted my last comment at 9:44 p.m. my time. Within eight hours, I had 193 spam messages from the same Russian IP address posting the same stupid message.

I am more than willing to pay the $5 monthly fee to akismet if it will help cut down on spam.

I know I could turn off anonymous comments, but we do get many good contributions to our news stories by people who would prefer to remain anonymous.

Thanks for the tip on blocking countries. That will be helpful.

Scott, has there been any headway into integrating akismet into the News Articles module? I had 514 spam messages in the past seven days. We are catching them in comment moderation, but it is still time consuming to scroll down through dozens of spam posts to find the three or four legitimate comments.

Because I am on a shared host, I don't have access to the ISS. I know I can update the webconfig file to block IP addresses, but I would have to add 2,680 lines of code just to block the Ukraine alone.

With comment moderation turned on, the comments posted to our stories have dropped to a trickle.

I really would like to find a solution to this nagging problem.

Thank you, Cziv! That information looks promising. I'll hunt down someone who better understands coding and see if we can't modify our comment fields to create the invisible fields to trap the spammers.
