Hi Scott,
I like the look of the shortened URLs - do the old ones do a 301 redirect to the new ones? I need to make sure I wont have 100's of duplicate content.

| This will be released later in the week as an option, I need to be 100% sure that it's working correctly as a 301 redirect otherwise you get into a continuous loop. |

Scott have you considered including functionality to auto-generate tiny urls for the articles that won't max out on twitter? Even the shortened url can still be too long for a tweet if the article title is long.
I have the code to do this as we're about to implement such functionality on the social networking links to the media on our main website.
The code allows you to use Bitly, Isgd, or Tinyurl and its in VB.NET and C# |

Yes for all 3. And if bit.ly is used you can pass the login and apikey so that the link can be generated and tracked under the users bit.ly account. |

I just entered the non-shortened url after having configured it for shortened urls and the long one still was in use. The "use canonical link" option has been checked (by default). We will be punished by Google for showing duplicate content.
Any suggestions are appreciated. |

No the 301 hasn't been implemented yet - I was nervous about looping. I have the code in there but it's commented out.
I don't think you'll be published by google if you have the canonical link. |

How many views in the NA module use the Canonical Link setting Scott? If they all do then it would be ok to switch from the Ifinity one to yours, but if only the Article Detail uses it then there might still be duplicates (the Ifinity one works with all views except if you change the ArticleID variable).
The canonical link is only a suggestion for search engines, the 301 redirect would be much better visually and from an SEO perspective IMHO.
The way I implemented the redirect in the ST mods was to run the URL through my shortener function and compare it to the current requested one - if it was different then do 301 redirect to the correct one - I'd be happy to test it for you on my live data if you want to wrap it in a setting in a beta version? |

I do not think that you will be punished, because in fact, the canonical URL is the proposed method from Google, if 301 can not be implemented.
Have a look to this article.

| Yes, but there are many other search engines that don't necessarily follow the canonical URL. It is a great step forward but the best solution would be to only ever HAVE one canonical physical version of it instead of telling search engines which one don't you think? |

Yep, I agree. But I am not sure that it will be possible, my URL are accessible through 3 different way. Can Scott implement this ? He also has to take into account MULTILINGUAL website. Today, it is working for ML website, I would like to avoid that a 301 redirect crash ML website...
That's pretty important, isn't it ?
