Might be being really slow here but how can I remove the Kick it! | DZone it! | del.icio.us functionality from the posts. I do need to be able to use the newslatest module in other areas of the site though.

Edit the template.  I believe (from memory) it's the Dispaly Item template.  You'll see the HTML near the bottom that provides these links.  Just delete the entire DIV section.
