Hi, I'm here, sorry just flat out all yesterday doing upgrades. I'll get back to your email shortly.. very briefly: You need bandwidth.. not just Gb per month, but total throughput out of the box... if you can only stream 2 videos at a time then it doesn't matter how many gb you get per month. The throughput is never advertised, but it does matter a lot because you have to split it up across all of your visitors at any one time.

I'll check it more closely this afternoon.

Hi DV,

How is your experience with webhost4life now? I am in the same trouble. I use their VPS plan and I am experiencing a lot of down time.

Hi there,

I have switched to VPS 20 days ago.
For the beginning, I had plenty of problems (downtime longer than with Shared hosting...)
And now I am in close contact with one technician who is handling my problem, he is currently fine tuning the VPS.
Currently, I have ~20 minutes of downtime everyday, same hour. They are searching the problem....

Robax, no downtime at all ????

Hi DV,

Mine's really good. The only downtime is when I make it happen myself, either by mistake or on purpose. The upgrade to 4.8.1 took it offline for 30 mins last week for example. Performance has also never been better and I can now leave it loaded all the time. I'm very pleased with the performance and reliability of my account, however it took remote desktop access to get it all sorted out. I was unable to make it work 100% via the helpdesk.

Odove has been having a lot of trouble however and sent me some details. One thing that becomes clear is that the two basic semi-dedicated VPS accounts are not at all the same thing as the Advanced VPS account. The latter account has a completely independent operating system with 25% of the dual core's ram and CPU resources. If I'm not using the resources, then no one is. The other two VPS accounts turn out to be more like the normal shared accounts. They share CPU and RAM with everyone and the restriction on the number of customers and websites is what is supposed to make it run better.

Can you have a look at the Server Info module from Innventua and paste in some details. I'm interested in the screen that has the CPU model info as well as the ram and usage. Let me also know what happens over time to the CPU and RAM usage reported... does it stay the same, is the cpu always on 100% or does it spend a lot of time idling, etc. Does the ram tend to increase before the downtime or is it always roughly on 2/3 of the available.

Also, are you still running just the one portal or do you have several? The thing that has become apparent is that any shared resources are potentially a shared problem and after examining Odove's details, it does look like the two lower semi-dedi accounts are going to have that issue. I didn't' know that because I leap-frogged those accounts and just got the big one straight off.

Hello Rob,

I am using the MS Power VPS account (basic one). The advanced is far too much expensive for me...
I already upgraded to VPS, which was not so cheap.

Concerning the memory and processor, how could I monitor this ???

DV
PS: I am running 2 websites, but one if for fun, and very few people access it. The other one, DV FX website is much more bigger, and lots of visitors every minutes/seconds.

Hi DV,

This module here: http://www.inventua.com/dnn-systemmonitor-overview.content
It's free to try, costs to keep. I ended up buying it before I got remote.

It has three modules, two are very similar. Use the SystemInfo one on a page and refresh it.. or set the page to auto-refresh every couple of minutes and watch memory and cpu usage over time. Note that it will show data shared with the entire server. On the APVS account it shows only the dedicated resources. I've only just confirmed after looking at Odove's results that the two lower VPS ones are shared accounts and this does affect how they work.

Paste one full screen of it in here so I can see what the specs are.

I am a little bt worried to install a new module in my portal...
If I later on delete it, will it delete EVERYTHING or do I have traces everywhere (like a windows programm). I would like to be sure before doing so...

If you look inside a module PA for the sql install script you can see what is done in the db.

In this case there is no sql script and so no new tables or procedures are added to the db.

If you also examine the dnn script, you'll see it just registers the module, creates the module folder and puts 2 dll's in the bin.

This module does nothing invasive or risky... but as always, run your backup before doing anything.

Ok, good to know.
So, for information, the reply from Webhost4life:
- at around 00:00 (US PST) there is a backup of the whole server. This can affect the website, and that's why my website is down for ~20 minutes. Nothing can be done to avoid this, excepted to buy a full dedicated server...

I am currently on semi dedicated, MS Power VPS

Mine does that backup thing as well once a week - it was at 1am PST but they moved it on my request to 4am because the 1am slot was actually an inconvenient 10pm where my users are. I noticed that the server CPU would go up high at the same time every week even though none of the processes on my instance were using it. I guessed it was a backup, but the support person had no idea and was messing with my app pools until I told him to stop and pass it on to a technician for a reply. The tech confirmed it is a weekly backup.

The biggest problem at WH4L I think are the frontline support staff. Some of them are just terrible.

Take note of the time it happens and then confirm it the following week at the same time. The disk will be going crazy during the backup and that can drastically slow down any sites that have to start up from disk during that period. It doesn't make mine go offline but that'll be the dedicated resources helping out.

Yes, I confirmed this.
Unfortunately, it does not happen weekly, but daily.... And we can not change it, since I am not alone on the server, but it is MS VPS Power... So I have to live with it. But since the ticket is handle by a senior, the problem has quite disappeared now... Looks strange, I start to believe that some front support staff are terrible, as mentionned...
