I was just informed, by WebSecureStores, that they will not offer the flv (flash video) extension because they did not pass the flv test. Upon questioning what that meant, they replied they could not give out technical details.

We are, in the process, of offering DNN training videos in flv format. Although, I have been very happy with WSS and my semi-dedicated plan for over a year, I am forced to look for a new host.

We have been storing our vids on Amazon S3 to compensate for the WSS issue, but we would now like to use bizmodules.net's Ultra video gallery. This mod requires video storgage directly on the hosting server.

Other than WH4, or a dedicated box, does anybody have host recommendations for this situation?

Did not pass the flv test?? I would love to know what that means.

I'm hosting sites who use flv with no issues. Email or call me if you are interested.

I know you said no Webhost4life, but just to confirm for anyone else; flv and Bizmodules' Video Gallery work perfectly on my VPS account there.

I think that's pretty rich to tell you they can't give out technical details.

Tom,
Thanks again for the phone conversation.

Robax,
You have a point. I also have a semi-dedicated plan at WH4Life. I have tested UVG and it works fine.

I attempted to contact WSS yesterday to talk to a sales manager. The recording said all lines were busy due to a new sales promotion and I was forced to leave a message.

I then attempted to talk directly with a support center manager. Same deal. Leave a support ticket.

I know, for a fact, that they are offering the service to some people.

I really like WSS, but lately I have seen one hour down times. It used to be that way with WH4L, but the client sites that I am hosting there have been 100% uptime for quite awhile now.

Needless to say, I am performing site and sql backups this weekend...

Hi J!
I had the same problem with "Uvg".
that is what my host told me:
"we do not allow starting any external processes on the outside your IIS work process. (referring " exe invoking from .NET run time")

Hi robax,

I was with the UVG developer all day today.

I ported over one of our sites to WH4L to test UVG last night.

I got everything working except it won't produce the thumbnail screenshots. Did you have to trip any special permissions to get the thumbs to generate?

Frustratiing, I must have pushed up 600 mb of video testing today.

I create all of our edited vids as avis in Ultra 2 and then convert them to flv files in Camtasia studio. If you didn't set any special permissions, I have a feeling that he isn't supporting the codecs in Camtasia.

TIA
Buck

Buck,

Did you get a reply from Jeff? Is yours a dedicated or semi-dedicated server?

I have been struggling with the same issue with WSS for some time now.  I have anywhere between 5-15 separate 12 month accounts there at any given time (I need to keep them separate for billing reasons - so I don't do dedicated), I have been hoping to run flv's on them all along , but to no avail.  I have never even gotten as much as an explanation as you though... I only got "No... it hasn't been approved for security".

I have been using brightcove for video though (sort of a higher-end version of youtube).  You can see it on one of my sites at http://www.w4rg.org  it works well, but I would prefer having the flexibility of implementing my own methods using FLV files.  This issue combines with limitations with email have really left me having to start looking elsewhere for hosting too.  It's a shame, because I do like them a great deal, but it seems that whenever I need something outside of what they normally offer, there is no discussion... it's just "NO".

I may have some answers for you.

I have worked with Mr. Pengtsen, the developer of Ultra Video Gallery, throughout the weekend.

In regards to my post above, regarding the screenshot thumbs not generating, this was due to a space in the username of the user uploading the videos. Example Team Jive vs. TeamJive. A fix will be in the next build.

Also in the next build will be the ability to point to a external source for the storage location of the video files. This should solve a lot of headaches with your host providers.

I had ported a test site to WebHost4Life and UVG performed as expected. Downside was that the videos could not keep up and would stop several times until they were cached.

I don't think any basic or semi-dedicated server plan will have the ability to manage a quantity of simultaneous hits on these videos.

If I have not mentioned previously, check out Amazon S3 for your video storage. I have videos stored on this service and it is fast and affordable.

Pricing

  • Pay only for what you use. There is no minimum fee, and no start-up cost.
  • $0.15 per GB-Month of storage used.
  • $0.20 per GB of data transferred.

Firefox users can also get the S3 Organizer addon at
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3247

This is a ftp program made to upload files to s3.

Rhuber,

IMHO - If a hosting company is more concerned about their needs than yours, you have to do something about it. You can't miss out on a technolgy trend, like flv. You would be doing your clients an injustice and you are losing the ability to monetize.

I have several sites running flv files and custom swf players. You can get around this by hosting your vids on Amazon S3 and calling them on your WSS hosted site. That doesn't make the situation right, it makes it doable.

TIA
Buck

I got a response from WSS, they told me that it is only available on dedicated servers. The reason is probably that there is an impact on other users using that machine.

So the options really are, 1. store the videos elsewhere, 2. find a host that supports it in a shared scenario (will uptime/performance be an issue though?) or 3. get a dedicated server.

I currently run all my sites on a dedicated server hosted at websecurestores.

Scott,
I appreciate your heads up on this. Tom and I both are aware that this is not the case.

A semi-dedicated package would not keep up with the load anyhow.

$500.00 bucks a month, for a dedicated server,  is too large a nut right now.

Best regards,
Buck

Are you hosted with WH4L now, justnorth? I ask because I have just about had it with WSS. I don't know what has happened with them, but it seems I need support much more frequently these days, but any time I submit a support question, they answer with something semi-related and clearly never read the actual question. I'm just tired of it.

I have heard that while WSS has taken a sharp dive, WH4L has pulled it together quite nicely. Any truth to this? I have 14 individual accounts with WSS, and I swear I feel like I am 'putting them out" when I have a question. I've got to get my stuff out of there.

Have you guys heard about the free silverlight hosting for videos? You get 4GB of video hosting for free, that is load balanced, etc.

 Hi Rhuber,

Yes, we switched over to a VPS server at WH4L. I am fairly satisfied with the performance. We have been having out of memory issues as of late. This has occurred since we upgraded 3 of our sites to DNN 4.6.2

I had all sites down all day Saturday. Quite disappointing since we launched a major campaign for a new audio CD release on Friday.

After much discussion, with WH4L support staff, I pointed them to the article by Shaun Walker regarding the memory issues that he was having on the DotnetNulke site.

Here is an excerpt:

http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Community/Blogs/tabid/825/EntryID/1608/Default.aspx

You will remember that a 32 bit Windows box only has 2.0 GB of memory available to all application pools. The memory is allocated equally across the application pools. So with 11 active application pools, the dotnetnuke.com website app pool did not have enough memory available to satisfy its needs - it was starving. How?

The DotNetNuke web application relies on caching to achieve optimal performance. When the application needs data, it makes a call to the database and then stores the result in the ASP.NET cache so that it does not need to call the database on subsequent requests ( retrieving data in-process from the cache is far more efficient than retrieving data out-of-process from a database ). But this model falls apart when there is not enough memory available. ASP.NET will attempt to insert the data into the cache, but will be unsuccessful because it is full already. As a result, when the application needs to access that same data in the future, it will be forced to go to the database again ( and again and again and again.... ). In our case the database was being hammered so hard that it was spiking the CPU utilization at 100%, blocking SQL Server threads. The meant data was not being passed back to the web application, which in turn, resulted in the web application not being able to issue a response to the web browser. So it would "hang". So how to fix it?

Well, as it turns out, we did not actually need to have 11 application pools on our web server. We had provisioned them that way to provide isolation for various applications, but the reality is that we could group some of the applications together. Consolidating the applications pools down to 5 pools resulted in more than a 2X memory allocation increase for the remaining pools. With more memory available, DotNetNuke could cache data efficiently and take the burden off of SQL Server, bringing back down to <20% CPU utilization.

They replied and the sites have had no issues so far.

Here is the  reply from WH4L tech support:

I have re-organized your application and reduce the number of application pools. Would you please monitor the sites to see if it is improved? Thank you.
