Hi All,
I have been pulling my hair out with this problem I have been having on a shared box @ WSS.  I have a hosted DNN domain there, and an email account setup (me@mydomain.com).  Last week I asked for a Domain Alias to be added to my account at WSS, without any email functionality.  i.e. the email for the new domain was being hosted at another location, and only the web traffic would be headed towards my WSS acct.
Unfortunately the WSS support added the new domain as a hosted domain, so email functionality was installed on my acct.  So what ended up happening was when I was sending an email from my me@mydomain.com account to an account at someone@newdomain.com the message was being bounced back stating that no email account existed.

Once it was realized that the account had been setup wrong, they changed it to a Domain Alias without email support.  The problem is that I still can not send email to the someone@newdomain.com when I am using my me@mydomain.com account.  WSS is saying they do not what the problem is, and are now becoming unhelpful.

To add to the mix, I have a completely separate domain hosted at WSS, on another server, and the mail is not hosted on the same box that the previous mentioned domains are.    Using this completely separate domain I can send an email successfully to someone@newdomain.com.

I have asked WSS support to delete the alias and recreate it, ping the newdomain.com mailserver from the mydomain.com server (and they could).  I also asked them to flush the DNS cache on the mydomain.com server which they did.  All with no effect.

Has anyone else had this problem - and how did you resolve it??

I'm not an expert on mail domains, but isn't there a MX record which covers the email, shouldn't this be pointing at your existing mail server? Was your existing mail server working previously?

They say that the MX record ispointing to the right mail server - but still no dice. I am considering moving hosts at the moment because customer service on this has been so poor. As of now they have started to say that customized DNS settings are not supported and there is nothing they can do.

It must be something in their server that is routing the mail to the wrong server, a setting on the machine, since if I use another account in their network I am able to deliver mail. I just can't get a mail delivered using the server I registered the domain on... grrr.

I don't see how it could route incorrectly if there is a MX record in place pointing to your other site? Have you talked with whoever hosts your mail server for there help?

I use websecurestores and have the same issue.  Here's what I had to do:

Add the parent portal WITH email, then go to HELM and use the DNS zone editor to point the MX record to my email provider.  Why?  They told me the only way you can get to the DNS editor in HELM is to have the domain with email, not just an alias.

I only did this because I want to have all emails setup outside the hosting provider to make it easy to move later if needed.  Manually re-creating dozens or hundreds of emails would be too much work.

My next stop will be a VPS or dedicated server since we are outgrowing shared hosting.
