I've sent this off to Websecurestores, but their response seems to be taking a while.. perhaps someone here who has an account with them can let me know some details?

1.       Does the control panel allow one to reliably copy, move, zip and unzip a folder that contains perhaps 200Mb in 12,000 file and folders. These operations are primarily for the purposes of upgrading or backing up a Dotnetnuke portal installation.

2.       Do you enable Sharepoint services (WSS) on Server 2003?

3.       Does the control panel let me set domain folder paths at will?

4.       The database size of the ASP Business account says “4/500Mb” –Is that 4 totalling 500Mb or 4 totalling 2000Mb?

5.       Can I backup and restore MSSQL databases via the control panel at will?

6.       Do you have PHP, MySQL and PHPMyAdmin installed, as I have need to host small PHP shopping carts.

7.       Are the email servers normally at “mail.servername.com” – I have email accounts I have to shift without making changes to my client’s computers.

8.       What account do you recommend for the following scenario:

1.       Couple of dozen domains

2.       Mostly in a single Dotnetnuke instance, but with more instances for development and backup.

3.       Perhaps a handful of PHP shopping carts

4.       All sites very low hits and bandwidth – they are local small business sites.

5.       Disk space requirements not very high either

6.       But sites still need to be reasonably snappy to operate.

7.       Require Smartermail with any number of email accounts

8.       Require automatic emailing of Stats, preferably Smarterstats

9.       I don’t need to resell hosting, but I want room to expand upward towards vps or dedicated if needed

9.       And this is the most important question of all to me:
What does Websecurestores consider to be an acceptable maximum first-page compile time for a typical Dotnetnuke portal?

10.   And the follow-up click:
What does WSS consider to be acceptable second and third page response for a typical Dotnetnuke portal?

And one that I forgot to add... Can you set mailbox size limits or are they fixed? I have a couple of photo print stores on my client-list and they of course receive images sent by email. Webhost4life keeps blocking their email at 20mb. My other host Appliedi just let it go through no matter what.

Thanks for anyone's experience in this.. or even with the same issues on any other host? I've found that a few of the Windows DNN-focussed hosts don't appear to have PHP, but I need it.

For item 1, I would use FTP.

For the rest, have you sent it to sales or support emails for websecurestores? There is also a 2 week trial so you can test a lot of these features out too.

I can answer some of these questions.

1. Move and Copy you can do with the file manager, but not zip or unzip. I have to agree that ftp is better, but if you can ftp a zip file, then unzip it via the file manager, than that would be ideal.

5. Yes.

6. I think you need to special request it as most of their servers dont have php or mysql. I dont think they had phpmyadmin installed, but you can install it yourself. I am almost positive i had to install it myself. When i was hosted there, i had php / mysql on my server and used it for a few things.

7. Yes.

You can adjust mailbox limits, but i dont know what the max size is.

Good Luck !!

WH4L also tell me to use FTP, but I've found it pretty much impossible. It's never reliable enough. I tried ftp yesterday again for a site but it always fails after a few hundred or a few thousand files... I can never just fire it up and let it go. And my god it's so slow in the way it handles each single file as it's own upload or download.. it seriously spends hours and hours dealing with something like the providers or the module folders.. I use SmartFTP and I assume other apps are the same in the way?

I do use ftp for the db files, but for the sites themselves I've found the only reliable method is Frontpage, which works a lot quicker as it seems to do far less mucking around inbetween each file - the site comes down like a single big transfer process instead of thousands. And after the first sync, each successive update only takes a few minutes. Then I use the control panel to backup the db. Uploading again from scratch  takes a couple of hours, but again, if I sync it regularly locally then sync it back to another folder on the server, it can be managable.

But even then, I feel that making a duplicate of a site for upgrades or testing on the server should take place on the server, so I just get the support guys to do it and it only takes them a minute. They don't mind and it's obviously possible.... but then I have to wait anywhere between 5 minutes and a day to hear back.

I'd definitely like to hear how FTP works for anyone else.. how long does it take to duplicate a site on the server and are you using something that works better than Smartftp.

I sent the email to the sales address that is on the Websecurestores site; assuming that sales people would respond quicker to the questions. I still haven't had a peep out of them though so it's not a good sign. The 2 week trial is certainly a good thing.

I did get a response within a day from EasyCGI on a similar set of questions, and the guy gave mostly good answers, but the account wasn't quite right for me in the end.

Thanks for the replies,
Rob

Thanks for the info Gary.

1. WH4L used to allow us to upload a zip and then unzip it but they removed that function a while back. I can still zip stuff, but the control panel time-outs are set so that it inevitably fails when zipping a DNN site. I've found that the quickest way to duplicate a site myself on the server is to create the new folder and then use the control panel's copy folder function to copy each subfolder across. For some folders such as desktopmodules and providers, I have to go anther level down to stop it failing with a  time out.  Sometimes I do this because I don't want to wait up to a day for the support staff to copy it.

6. I'll fire some info back here on the PHP thing if they respond to my email.

Good stuff

I use CuteFTP for files, and it seems to work OK, but SmartFTP should do the same job. With that many files, maybe try doing a top level folder at a time?

I would email the support email address.

Hello,

I've been hosting my sites on WebSecureStores for more than a year now (thanks to Scott's recommendation) and have no troubles until now:
- Few days ago decided to upgrade to dnn4 and use Installer option they provide,
- And in few minutes successfully arising dnn434,
- tried to upload dnn435 using ftp...
- ... still trying !

- Send a ticket about permissions - response (inside 12 hours) saying everything is ok!
- Send another one about permissions and programs I use - response (inside another 12 hours) recommending other ftp clients (I used SecureFX and Total commander)
- Installed FileZilla they recommend and even try IEftp = same result - error 550 Access denied!
Any experience with this?

Help?

I should update this thread.. I never had a peep out of WebSecureStores, not through two emails and not even through Scott's personal passing on of my details. I ended up sticking with Webhost4life because they seemed to keep wanting to help.. even if the help was exceedingly frustrating to handle. In the end they put me on a different server and although I had to migrate all the files manually over a weekend, it worked. The new server has been much better overall so I'll stay there for now.

And regarding your problem John.. I may have a solution because something similar happened to me on WH4L a while back. I'd been there nearly three years using SmartFTP for certain actions when all of a sudden it ceased to work. Just a trickle of data and then failures. The support desk wasn't able to help and only kept pointing me to other FTP apps. In the end I randomly clicked the Passive Mode button in SmartFTP and voila... it's been fine ever since. There was no reason they could give why it worked fine in active mode for all that time, but at least it works now.

If it's not that then I'll be at a loss.

Thanks Rob,

I already tried to toggle passive mod on and off.
Weird thing is that last night I tried to ftp from home and it was success! So, now I’m examining my network (MS SBS 2003 newly installed) . . .
. . . There are no words to explain what I’m feeling right now. It’s working! Issue was complex multiple permission settings in SBS firewall which can be resolved only by try & fail method.

Must give credit to WebSecureStores as nice, fine, quick and professional hosting company.

I thought it may have been a proxy issue, I've had similar issues before.
