This new feature introduced into the lastest version of PA has definately opened up new doors for templating.
New Functionality Includes:-

 • You can now link the field elements in the Drop Down List custom field to a property type. For example, if you had a car template with a property type of Make and another custom field called Model, you can now link the model (custom field) to make (property type). To set this functionality up, select the "Linked To Property Type" option above the field elements textbox on the edit custom field form. You can see a live example here.
I've noticed in the "Add new Property" form that even if a custom field is linked to a specific property type that all other property types, when adding a new property will have that custom field still display. I'm guessing this is may be a hard workaround to remove those custom fields and have them only display on the "Add new Property" form when the correct property type is selected. Is this possible?

Also, can this new functionality be extended to other field elements such as check boxes and radio buttons?

One thing I would like to do since this new functionality has been intro'd is to extend it to also allow for this type of scenario:

When adding or editing a new custom field, the form is broke into sections:

1. Custom Field Details: allow for one line, multi line "Field Type" without custom field link to property type.

2. Search Details Section: allow for "selected range" to have custom field link property type.

Reasoning for this: for instance, If I have multiple realestate types: Homes, Rentals, Commercial Property,  I can setup a custom field for price with a one line field type that relates to all properties, then in the "search details" section, I can allow for that custom field to be broken down into price ranges specific to those types.

Lets say I have $700 in my "selected range" as one of my values. It currently still shows up for all properties when doing a search, but in reality I don't need $700 showing in search fields if Commercial or Homes are selected in the search because neither of those properties would sell for $700.

Again, I gotta say this latest feature has GREAT possibilities, I just gotta see if we can improve on it.

Comments, Suggestions, Workarounds?

Hi Scott,

This Custom Fields Linked To Type function is great ... only that i have to specify a "char" for all other emty elements  other wise the link order  will  jump everywhere !  Can you check this please ?

Not sure what you mean by "the link order will jump everywhere?"

goBlanks, I don't understand your first few paragraph:-

"I've noticed in the "Add new Property" form that even if a custom field is linked to a specific property type that all other property types, when adding a new property will have that custom field still display. I'm guessing this is may be a hard workaround to remove those custom fields and have them only display on the "Add new Property" form when the correct property type is selected. Is this possible?"

It only works for dropdown lists currently.

I think I understand the next part, you want to control visibility via property type?

HI Scott,

This is what I mean ...If I removed those "-" in the empty fields then the order of the fields go like this :

GlenWin,

I think your problem is due to empty fields being displayed with no value. I've not run into this yet. Something I've immediately done when linking a custom field directly to a type is to wrap them with a [HASVALUE:xxx] in my templates because I only want them to display on properties when a value is available.

Like this:
[HASVALUE:MLS][CAPTION:MLS]:[CUSTOM:MLS]:
[/HASVALUE:MLS]

Then when viewing certain types that my custom field is linked to, a value will populate and when viewing types that my custom field has a null or empty value, the custom field is completely stripped out.

Hope this helps, and I'll see if I run into the same problem by not using the [HASVALUE] tag.

Edit: Also note that by using the [HASVALUE] tag, it will also strip out any HTML (which I thought useful).

Further Clarification to my first post:

When "Adding a New Property", ALL custom fields are visible when selecting ANY property type and a custom field has already been linked to a specific property type.

For instance: I have "homes" and "land" for property types. I also have custom fields "bedrooms" and "acreage". "Bedrooms" is linked to "homes" with values and also to "land" with no values. Then there is "acreage" which has no value for "homes" but has a value for "land".

Then: a user goes to add a new property and selects "homes" on the "new property" form. The user will see both "bedrooms" and "acreage" as options when "acreage" has no value and is not needed in the form when selecting "homes" as the property type.

Did I get it this time? I might have confused myself.........

The next thing:

Granted at this time, "DropDown" is the only field type that supports this new feature. But it restricts our options to only pre-populated fields.

For instance: If you refer back above to my example, I am currently restricted to "dropdown" on the custom field "acreage". This means that by using "dropdown" I have to give "acreage" pre-existing values for that field and also for search values in order to link it to a specific property type. But what I would like to do is use "One Line Textbox" and link "acreage" to the property type "land" and no other property types. Then by using "one line textbox" the enduser can still enter a custom value when adding a property. I can still enter a "search range" in the search companion for the endusers to search on.

Hope I'm making a little sense............

Looking Back, I just realized I jumped off track

In reference to my very first post about searching:

Currenty "Link to type" is available in the "custom fields" form for the section: Custom Fields Detail. It would be cool if "Link to Type" could also be extended to the section: Search Details. So that if searching on a custom field by range, it can be split in sections of ranges and specifed to a "property type"

Like this:
Current Search Range for ALL property types: 0|100|300|500|700|1000|25000|50000|75000|100000|125000|150000|200000|250000|300000
|400000|500000|750000|1000000|2000000|5000000

Break down search range to this:
Linked to Property Type:
For Rent: 0|100|300|500|700|1000
Homes: 25000|50000|75000|100000|125000|150000|200000|250000|300000|400000|500000|750000|1000000
Commercial Property: 125000|150000|200000|250000|300000|400000|500000|750000|1000000|2000000|5000000

I know, I got a lot of thoughts and ideas going on, and some of them may not work or are tough to implement, but I gotta try.........
