Hello Scott,
Here are some thoughts.

I am trying to build site for individual real estate agents. I want to allow these agents to sign up and add/edit only their own listings. I have been trying to modify the stock repository module for this because it allows for listings to be added and edited by individuals. I was wondering if this will have that same functionality, or if there is only one login to admin the whole site?

Something that would be nice to see that I have seen on a couple of other real estate sites is searchable property features such as:

  • Pool
  • Air Conditioning
  • Garage
  • Secure Parking
  • Lake View
  • Ocean View
  • Mountain View
  • Waterfront
  • Tennis Court
  • Pet Friendly
  • Furnished

This is done with check boxes on the add listing page. Then on the search page the same check boxes are available to help narrow down a search.

I have a sample layout of an add listing page here

Thanks for all this, I am looking forward to seeing this go. If you need a beta tester or any help with anything please let me know, i have done beta testing, and QA in the past and would love to help. I am not sure if there is anything else that I could do but I want to offer anyway, I am willing to help in anyway I can.

Do you have any eta at all, or a rough idea when we would be able to have something like this?

Thanks.

Jamie

I think Jamie's ideas are great but what would really make the module powerful and flexible would be for the Features/Aamenities checkboxes to be confgurable by the admin so as to better identify the niche market he is using it in.

Also if would be nice that thngs would be configurable enough so as to not be tied specfically to Real Estate. I have a need to for something that will accomodate the listing/selling of Outfitter and Guiding businesses. They had similiar needs as the housing market but in most cases there are no permanent structures so bedrooms/bathrooms etc dont make sense, nor does a rent option so if there was the ability to choose wheter you wanted the for rent options displayed etc.

Have a great day!

Jamie,

I would have to agree with LOliver.  Details like check features should be able to be made on the fly.  I have seen some horrible modules that people have made for Real Estate.  I bought one to try it and the client was just not happy with it at all.  The best thing to do is have the host have the ability to set up a list of feature that they want.  Also it might be nice to have the list display be template driven.  Kind of like Active Forums, let them modify how it looks.  Also offer them to put a link to the image they want in the template an opening and closing tag (Something new).  That way if they want to use there own image they can put in the path, if they want to use a HTML bullet or different text they could.

Just some more ideas.

Yes, it would be better to have the admin be able to setup what check boxes should appear, i should have mentioned that in my post. Just didnt know how much work we wanted to pile on Scott! :)

I imagine it would be skinnable, looks like from some of the mockups that Scott did that he is using tokens, so that makes skinning easy, you just place the token on a page where you want it and wrap it with some css.

So from what I understand from your responses:-

* A configurable list of checkbox's should be provided (to be configured at the module level).
* There should be a Buy/Rent option. (other thread), you should be able to hide this though?

A recurring problem is that the "Bedrooms/Bathrooms/Garages" is not applicable to all "Property Types" (e.g. Land), I imagined that would simply be a "-" in this case. But some people have indicated that they would like things like Square Foot, etc. (e.g. Land), so this would be based on the property type of the entry. I had planned to iconise this part as well, so I'm not really sure the best way to implement this part? Maybe I should just do it so that "Land" would be "-" for Bedrooms to just get the module built, and customize down the track?

I think that there has to be point where you build the module with plans for enhancing it.  Knowing where it is most likely headed in the future can help with the design so that any neceessary infrastructure can be built to at least provide for easier enhancements in the future.

I think getting something built for us to play rather than trying to build in all the requests at this time is a much better plan.

Have a great day!

Good point Larry. It is easy to get overwhelmed with details and functions.

Scott, can you let me know about my original question, about administering listings. Will there be only one login to administer all the listings, or will we be able to have users administer their own listings. This is really what I need, as I am needing to setup a site for a local real estate company that has five or six agents, and they all want to be able to administer only their own listings.

Thanks! :) You guys ROCK!

Yes, that is why it is called "Estate Agent" and there is a section for each agents details on the screens. The initial release may not have the agent information, while we get the mechanics of adding/editing properties.
