Scott,
I see friendly URLs might make it to DNN 4.6. Your site listed as a resource but are you involved/aware? I ask because I would hate to have to redo my URLs simply because they didn't consult you. If you are involved, has there been any discussion of formatting the folder names with specific characters?

Yes - I'm in talks with Shaun at the moment. I'll write a blog article discussing the aspects of the proposed solution (currently in design). For my own purposes, I would like to preserve the mode we are operating at the moment (TabPath).
Can you describe your scenario about formatting folder names with specific characters, are you referring to casing? |

Great news! I agree with maintaining the tabpath like structure even if executed by a different method.
One challenge I face as a web producer is maintaining the authority of site as I transition them to DNN. Clients are not interested in loosing traffic and traffic is intimately connected to a sites' back links. Google measures back links in terms of quantity, content and quality of the links. Deleting the page linked to removes (diminishes greatly) this connection.
As is now, I use ISAPI_rewrite to permanently redirect old requests to dnn pages. This is less desirable for three reasons: 1) the DNN installation now must live with a number of rules 2) it take some time to get the rules right and even then they will conflict with other functions occasionally 3) there is evidence that the authority is not fully transferred.
The absolute best method is to exactly replicate the old site and leave everything intact. A URL rewriter is central to this method but it must have flexibility to use dashes and other delineating characters.
It would also be very valuable to formalize the use of .htm and .html extensions. These extensions would be required for the above reasons but also for usability of the sites - people are much more familiar with htm than aspx. DNN is close now but FCK editor chokes when the extension is routed through .net.

Good point about the extensions, I'll add a configuration option in the provider for it.
It will still require an IIS change for non asp.net extensions, but that would be up to you :)
So the FCKEditor doesn't work with a non aspx extension? |

When I last tried a year ago, FCK editor used .html files for its templates and caused an error. My guess, when it requested them the DNN engine tried to parse the page and failed. You would be better positioned to say why.
I tried excluding paths and a few other options like turning .html extension off in the FCK editor folders but it never worked so I gave up. At the time, I wasn't going to be able to replicate the URLs due to a lack of underscores so the extension change was a relatively small issue.
I guess a fix might be to retool FCK to use a .resx, .tmp or .txt extension for all its resource files. This or DNN would have to be provided a list of files/paths to just pass through. |

We'll be using the Tabpath that allows a dictionary type lookup (fast). The TabPath doesn't contain hyphens though.
The solution for hyphenated Tabpath will be to allow the user to enter their own custom page name. |

Scott,
Will the custom page name support a url as follows... www.travel.com/west-palm-beach/discount-hotels.aspx This would be a great feature. This way a site owner could have directory based urls. |

I do not know what "dictionary type lookup" is...
But being able to enter hyphenated tabpath is perfect, otherwise, many people like me won't be able to upgrade to the new DNN, because it will break the URL... And hyphenated url are necessary for almost everybody.
