I don't have that much experience with HREF exchange, but I think it allows you to manually assign names and it uses a different technique (find/replace on the html)
The friendly URLs on this uses the inbuilt DNN provider and the page name + hierarchy to come up with a URL automatically. |

| I would not use HrefExchanger. Reason for my opinion is that you create URL's that are indexed by Google and if you ever decide to go a different route you will end up with a lot of 404's. As it looks now the solution provided by Scott will be in the core soon. That will be the moment for me to evaluate human friendly URL's. |

Great advice Mariette !! But on another side, why would I decide to go to a different route ?? Do you have example or idea in mind ?
Anyway, I have serious issues with HrefExchanger (some strange error, and it seems that it is not linked to PageLocalisation I used, because I disabled it - maybe with DNN 4.4.0 on which I am testing it). I will keep you informed of my future tests.
Thank you very much for this precious advice. DV |

You never know if the HREFExchanger will be supported for DNN 5 or 6. Maybe the developer stops with that product and then you are stuck.
HTTP Modules that change the way your site will indexed by a search engine are dangerous and you should always think about the future. That is why I wait until it is put into the core. |

Posted By Declic Video on 1/19/2007 10:14 AM Hello Scott,
Could you please tell me if Friendly Urls is compatible with DNN 4.4.x ??
DV FX PS: I am making test to compare Friendly Urls and HrefExchanger.

Ok, Mariette, you convinced me, definitively ! But how will I know if "Friendly URLS" provided by Scott will be supported for DNN 5, 6... ??? If you were me, you would live without Friendly URLs for the moment, till DNN integrate it into the core ??
With such a reasonment, I should not use any other third party module, because I do not know if they will be supported in future DNN version... Wow, I have just buyed few modules on snowcovered, now I am wondering what I should do... Hum... Using them, or using core module....... ARGH !!!!

There is no guarantee anything, especially if the core moves in a drastic direction away from what exists today.
You could still map URLs to point to any url naming structure in the future, so things will still get found. e.g. add a rule to process a certain rule to another.
I'll be doing my best to preserve the URLs in the future for this site, by releasing future updates to friendly URLs. |

You are right, there is no warranty neither with core module, I recently learned that the following coe modules was abandonned, due to security problems: - Events - Feedback - Discussions (see dnn forum).
Thanks for your valuable modules Scott, I am sure that I will be very happy with them, I will tell you as soon as I have tested all of them !!! ;-)

Hello Scott,
I have just finished my testing... Please tell me if I am wrong:
I have used Friednly URLs with Apollo module (Page Localisation) for localising my pages: English/French It seems that the Friendly URLs take into account only "one page name". I.E. if I have a page called "Test" in the page settings, "Test EN" in english and "Test FR" in french with Apollo module (same page, but different name with Apollo PageLocalisaion module), the Friendly URLs just remember one of it (in my case, it was "http://####/Test.aspx" - the page name in page settings.
THAT'S GREAT !!!!!!!! JUST PERFECT !!!!!
I do not see any problem with this manner of using it. I will be able to transmit to people ONLY ONE PAGE URL, and people select the language with the selector. Why this module is not part of the core ??? WHHHHYYYYYYyyyyy ??? ;-)

It was built to go into the core, but never went in for the 3.3 release.
Hopefully it might soon. |
