This week I've spent a lot of time on tags and the new image uploader.
The image uploader is coming together so well, I thought I would share it now. When you click "add new photo", the experience has been OK but it could have been better (especially when uploading a large number of files). This process has now been turned into a new wizard process.
Step 1:) Select Album
This step allows a user to select an album to upload a photo (auto-selected to current album if coming from an album you are viewing).

Or optionally create an album from this screen:-

Step 2:) Upload Files
This step is my favourite feature, it allows you to select multiple photos and have them upload (with progress bar), allowing you to cancel the upload etc, if you get tired of waiting. Immediate feedback is presented, and the images are even shown in thumbnails below.

Step 3:) Describe Photos
The last step is a bulk editor for title/descriptions/tags for the uploaded photos. I've not yet completed this screen yet.
Conclusion
This release has been focused on making simple gallery the most user friendly gallery module in the market. I look forward to hearing your opinions when it is released. |

looking real nice.. have you found a tool that lets one browse to and select multiple items... very cool! That alone will greatly improve usability.
A few thoughts come to mind as I look at the screengrabs...
Is that 2mb maximum determined by the timeout one has set in web.config for all uploads, or is it a limit imposed on the particular portal (portal space) or is it a completely separate and arbitrary value applied to the module instance?
Can the admin for example allow a gallery to upload 20mb of images. How does the user know when they've selected too many.
I'm wondering how the thumbnail view scales to say a hundred images if someone tries to upload that many at once.
Does the uploader know if more than the maximum value has been selected prior to upload or does it just stop after a certain number or certain mb value.
And finally, does it fail gracefully if too many have been selected... or does it lose time/effort put in by the user up to that point.
Looking good Rob

Thanks Rob for the queries.
The 2mb is going, it was there from the sample provided by SWFUpload. The uploader does take into account portal space though, so if you upload a bunch of photos, it will stop uploading when you hit your portal space. The great thing about it, is that this can be done on the client side without necessary uploading the file.
I take your point about the thumbnails appearing below, I may stop showing the thumbnails after a configured amount.
There is no limit to the amount you select, each is in asynch call, so some photos can upload successfully, while others will report an error message. |

Here is step 3... it's currently missing a textbox at the top, that will allow you to bulk add a tag.

| Furthermore, that screen above will be used for any bulk editing within the module. e.g. if you are browsing an album, you can click edit photos in the new command bar and you'll be taken to a similar screen. |

Where would the field for link go?
BTW, I've finished the enhancements and just doing some final testing before release. |

I would add an optional link field after the title, description, tags. (maybe have turned off/on in module settings?)
I've sent you a seperate email Scott but it opens up the gallery to be used for many other purposes. For example a gallery of stuff on the internet that you want to link to.
I'm building the community site around Windows Live Services: http://www.viawindowslive.com
We plan to have a gallery where people can submit a screenshot of their site using these technologies.
A link field would be awesome.

| I'm on the last part now (RSS enclosures & the tag cloud companion module). Both should be done today, and barring any major testing incidents, released very shortly. |
