Scott,

I know we have had past conversations on the need for a free membership plan.

Arguably, you could say that if you need a free site access just have them register for the site.

But it is not the same.

On my site, I teach how to profit from DotNetNuke using proven marketing techniques.

I want to give specific free content, video training, and downloads to free membership subscribers.

I also want to give them the opportunity to upgrade their memberships to gold or platinum plans if they see the value in all of the additional benefits to those plans.

When you have all members in the registered user role:

  • You cannot use the Subscription Content module to properly deploy a message. From my usage studies, if you set a message to Registered Users, the Gold and Platinum messages are overwritten by the Registered Users message. In other words, the Gold message is not seen and the Registered User message is - when a Gold Member is logged in.

  • You cannot separate your list mailings to just Free Members. If they are in the registration role, all members get this mailing.

  • With a Free Membership plan, you have the ability to set the duration of the membership.

A Free plan that would be assigned to a role, for example, named Free Membership and bypass the PayPal system is the only proper solution.

You would still require registration and then the optin to the Free Membership plan.

Please consider my request as urgent and I would appreciate community feedback on this subject.

Thank you as always,
Buck

It's not that I have a case against a free plan. There needs to be some work done for multi-subscription to make it easier for a person to signup to multiple items.

I assume a site featuring a free plan would have a multi-signup process?

Hi Scott,

I understand and have read the free plan posts.

A free plan with upgrade options is becoming a very popular form of membership site.

If we could determine the basic core that we could build on to make it dynamic for those that have specific needs, that would be a good start.

I am available to help in any way.

I know that Jack will have input as well.

Best regards,
Buck

Ok - it's not difficult to implement (the free plan), we just need to look at the signup process, specifically around multi-subscription signup.

I'm real keen to see this module develop as I'm still looking for a way to handle customer payments.

There is however one key point for me about using the module: It must be the sole place for customers to manage all subscriptions and payments. It fails if the customer has to go to multiple places and use different processes in order to process a payment or gain access to something.

It would have to cover paid and free role access, and also arbitrary fees - e.g. for carrying out some training or content production work.

Ideally a customer would be placed in a billing cycle of say 1 or 3 months and any new items selected by the customer or added by the admin during the period would be added to their next bill.

It the module might eventually be able to cover all bases, then please count me in on any sponsorship.

DNNProfessor,

What you basically want is already build into Dotnetnuke and is called 'Manage Services' in the user profile. There you can make what you want and you can create buttons with a text like 'Free Membership' and you are done. No module needed :-)

Our goal is to provide various subscription plans (for organization membership) with the same module on the same page.

Example :

Subscription Plans :

[ ] founders members (free)

[ ] non profit organizations ($20/year)

[ ] expert in neurological rehabilitation ($50/year)

....

In our case, the free subscription it is not an trial period.
