Scott and gang,

I will scour the subscription tools posts tonight, but, has there been any thought on upgrading a silver member to gold during a 1 year subscription period?

Case:

A silver member, after 3 months, wants to upgrade to a gold membership. What do you do?

It would be proper to allow them credit for the 3 months against the price of a gold membership and not again charge them a full gold membership.

Any shared thoughts would be appreciated.

Buck

If you credit them the Total Amount of the Silver Subscription, you should only give them a gold through the end of the Silver subscription period. Alternatively, you could credit the amount of the remaining Silver cost against the cost of a new Gold subscription and start the Gold Subscription from that point. If a Silver subscription costs $100 and a Gold costs $200, after 3 months they used $30 of the $100 Silver Subscription. I would credit them $70 and charge $130 for a Gold Subscription starting on that date. Option 1 is a little different. In that one you would give them a $100 credit against the $200 charge, but the gold subscription would expire in 7 months.

I normally add 3 silvers and get them to send the money directly.

Jeff, thank you for your insight. One up and upgrading subscriptions is an important part of a membership site. I am trying to think of ways that it could be implemented in Subscription Tools to automate the proceedure and not involve refunding as this becomes a manual bookkeeping nightmare.

Scott,

Can you please eloborate on your 3 silver comment?

TIA
Buck

Yep, if someone subscribes for a silver and opts to go gold, I manually add 3 silver subscription to their account once receiving payment.

I assume you want this automated within the module?

The logistics of determining how many days left on a silver would be difficult.

What would be nice is to, at the very least, have the system determine that the member is in the silver membership and have the ability to charge the difference of a gold membership.

The system would then change the security role to gold.

If this could be done without manual entry and proceed to the PayPal, and hopefully a near future authorize.net payment proceedure, that would save alot of manual intervention.

Scott, have you had a chance to look at the code regarding my question on de-acrivating a plan and reminders?

I have 200 members whose silver is coming due.

Silver was an intro offer when the site started.

I have de-activated silver and need to know if they are receiveing renewal reminders or not.

FYI - I am outlining a video online seminar on your products. I will inform you when the first screencast is released.

Always appreciate your hard work,
Buck

Yep, I've looked at the code, the next release (tomorrow, just finishing a property agent enhancement at the moment) will fix it.

Sounds great about the screencast, let me know if there is anything I can do.

I will keep you posted - Thanks.

On the topic above, have you also thought about the possibility of adding a one-time joining fee to Subscription Tools?

I thought there was already a 1-time joining fee? e.g. if you create a plan and set 1 time fee as the period

Lots of calculations?

Option 1: Subscription End Date - Today Date = Days remaining. Days Remining/Total Subscription days is percentage remaining. Percentage remaining * Cost of old = credit amount. Cancel current subscription and subscribe to new subscription at cost less the discount amount.
Option 2: Cost of New - Cost of Old = cost to charge. Subscription End Date remains the same. Remove the old and add the new role with the new charge and period end.

Hi Jeff,

You are absolutely correct.

I have known Scott for four years and understand the limitations on his time.

That was my way of saying, hint hint.

That would be a fantastic asset to the module.

Thanks for the info,
Buck

Sorry, I didn't catch the hint, hint part. I do understand about Scott's time and agree that it would be a great asset at some point.

I think you would want to specify on a plan whether or not it is upgradeable and to which plans you can upgrade to.

I think this could be part of the larger coupon/discount enhancement.
