Does anybody know the legitimacy of (Houston Dotnetnuke Users Group)http://www.dotnetnukehouston.com/AVCalendar/tabid/92/Default.aspx?

They have updated downloads for Alan Vance's AVCalendar for DNN 3.2.

I'll test it as well.

This is the module that the core team is also integrating to supliment or replace the Events module.

I have installed it on a development site and everything seems to work as advertised.

I did an update on a live site running the older version. There we aome errors on update about some tables already existing, but it seemed to work and everything is going fine so far. The site I upgraded was showing tons of errors in the site log related to the calendar module. I'll watch it for a few days and report back.

Jack,

Got the same sql errors on update. I am hoping the sql tables weren't changed. I will need to go through the tables and compare next week with Alan's last version.

Did the core team make any comments as to when they might adopt/release the module?

The community really needs a stable and sustained calendar module.

There has been no update on the community forums for the events module since early October.

Not sure if you guys have come across this or not, but David is doing one heck of a job with this module using Ajax and adding some other features. I have yet to put the module into production but in my test environments it's doing quite well.

Take a peek:

I've been testing this one too, David's doing a fantastic job, this will be a 'must have' module.

There are a couple of problems with recurring events when using en-GB but I'm sure that David will get it sorted out soon, he's very communicative.

Well... that looks great, but I'm just a little more perplex than before. If I'm correct we now have:

1. the basic events module in dotnetnuke distributions
2. Alan Vance's AVcalendar, latest version as of june 2005 or so
3. www.dotnethouston.com foster version, based on Avcalendar (latest ; december 2005)
4. intellisost's calendar (a combination of core DNN Event module and advanced Calendar)
5. A new official sub-project with Jeremy White as leader - which should integrate AVcalendar into DNN events (as an evolution or a replacement - an important point for migrations - that has not been clarified)

I understand this is the richess of the open source ecosystem, but in this case it's a bit too much

To increase confusion :

1. The localization problem (specifically the date format problem) - is a show stopper for a calendar module. That should be the first and only bug to correct for any new version, before any cool new functionnality. I cannot grant credit to any project that would not handle this seriously -and I understand it is a complex problem with all combinations of language / dates / web.config / sql configuration / windows settings

2. Is there any common database structure between all these modules, what are the paths between versions, past an future ? The second very important point

Hey Scott, when do you write a calendar module ?

Benoit

zoulou ,

I agree with you. What does it take to have somebody develop a stable and configurable calendar module?

I am currently using the build from Houston and I have daily ,30 pages of log errors that point to the detail page of that module.

If there were only 50 Scotts

Hey Guys, I'll be writing a 2006 update on my site tonight, I have only 3 days left on my current contracting requirements before I dive in full time development mode again! (minus a wedding in the middle -- next sunday!)

I think these calendars are coming along okay, but my sporting site needs a decent calendar module as well, so if there is nothing around (that is suitable) after my wedding, I would look at implementing SimpleCalendar.. there is still a lot of work to be done on simple gallery, but i'm hoping things really move quickly once I am devoting almost every waking hour again.

I see as of today Alan has a new version available on his site that fixes some issues.

I'm with you Benoit, confused with which to use. I just want something that works, has all the features I want and is ready today!

I've just posted the 2006 update here.

Jack, which module do you rate the highest (as of today)?

Hi Jack,

I am struggling with this because I have to update hunting and fishing seasons data for three US states and I cringe on re-entering all the data in another module.

If I understand you correctly, Alan has updated his original AV calendar, so since I uploaded the Houston version, I may have to start data entry over if I install Alan's new build ?

See here:

There is a problem.

On another note I would bet that David would have a script for conversion. But I hope that the core group gets David involved as I really like what I have seen from him to date.

"Hey Scott, when do you write a calendar module ?"

That was half ironic yesterday ; (since I just wrote there were 5 possible stategies for implementing a events/calendar today, I was not seriously requesting a 6th one).

But I woke up this morning (what's  english for the french saying 'la nuit porte conseil' - night brings advice ?) ,

... and I think that Newsarticles already has 90% of the features that others events/calendars miss, so why not ADD calendar views to newsarticles, and make it the best event module ever ?

Who said that Newsarticles could be a replacement for many other dnn modules ?

Imagine we have calendared views (by day/weeks,month, for a single category, or every categories in their own color, etc) ; all the data we need is already in the newsarticle module : author, date, category, etc - that's exacly what most of us need
