Hi Scott

I was a little reluctant to implement the DNNUpdate webservice stuff in
my modules before I moved to the subscription model, but now I think it
makes sense (ie. you don't charge for minor/major upgrades - they all
part of the package) so it might be a good idea to implement to make it
easier for subscribers to upgrade (especially considering your module
update cycle

What are your thoughts on implementing this in your modules?

Thanks

This is only an opinion, and if you can change my mind please do, but why do we as hosts need DNN update?

I would much rather subscribe to someplace on the developers site to be notified of updates so I can see what they are be fore I install them.

I'm not sold on its use at all. Give me the control as a host to check for updates but send me back to your site, not a services. I love the Inventua guys and think they do great work, I'm just not sold on the need for this kind of service for portal hosts.

Like I say, convince me otherwise and I'll change my position.

Hmmm - I was thinking of it more for the subscribers benefit, whatever their position may be - and bear in mind that you don't have
to use it - the normal distribution channels would still be there - it
could even be a case of you go to a site, read all the FAQs, documents,
updates etc. and then if you decided you do want it instead of d/l it
and installing it you merely go back to your site and click on Check
for Updates...

So I see it as more of an addition then a replacement.

I also thought it would work well with the smaller dev life cycle as I
usually let a couple of updates run past and then do a d/l of a new
module (obviously unless I want a bugfix badly) every few weeks -
purely because I don't want to spend too much admin time downloading
and installing it. This is where the check for updates would come in
handy.

Of course, I don't like the idea of being tied to a particular service,
so it must only be an additional means for making the update process
easier...

Maybe I'll do a trial run in my Events module... can't hurt I suppose?

Thanks

Actually, I just noticed this in the Terms of Service:

COMMERCIAL CONSIDERATION.  Free modules and skins can be made available through DNN Update to end-users at no cost.  For
commercial material, DNN Update provides a subscription service for
developers to provide product updates to end-users in return for a fee
which may include end-user support by the developer, point releases, or
all product releases for the developer during the life of the
subscription.  DNN Update will pay the developer
75% of all subscriptions sold through DNN Update at the close of each
month, payable to a PayPal account.  The minimum fee per subscription transaction payable to DNN Update is $US2.50.

I hadn't realised that was the case - I thought it was free across the
board and I can't justify paying a continual 25% for the service...
interesting though...

Thanks
