You know, I don't know why I haven't shared this before, but it just occurred to me. I use the quotes module not only for quotes, but I use it for another purpose, random tips.

On this site, http://www.netsplore.com, I am using it for quotes down at the bottom of the home page. Look right above the google ads running across the bottom. But, I also use it to provide a random tip. Up near the top of that site's home page, you will see a Random Tips section. There, I have keyed in the Key press as the author of the quote, and the tip as the quote and then arranged the template as I saw fit. I take advantage of the flexibility of the template and the randomness of the quote to generate random tips. While you are on that site, feel free to download my free Internet Explorer Utilities. There is a link for them at the top of the page. 8-)

On this site, http://www.linqdev.com, I am using the module just for tips. Look at the top of the page below the link to add the site to your home page and you will see a tip image. That is using the quotes module. The template is more sophistocated than normal. I have a table in the template with one row and three columns. First column has the img tag and url to tip image. Second column is empty and is just for spacing. Third column is the quote with a span around it to control the formatting.

Thanks Scott for such a moldable module!

IMHO - The quotes module is one of the most underutilized modules in Scott's arsenal of great products.

We have also used it for testimonials (http://www.jivemg.com/Services/WebSolutions/WebsiteDesign.aspx), promoting random featured articles, and the latest use is to show daily YouTube videos.

If I may take a moment to expound on the later. YouTube not only allows you to grab the code to show a video on your site - they promote it. How cool! Search for videos that are relevant to your site content, place them on your site, and use their bandwidth. When we produce how to videos, we upload them to YouTube and then pull them down using this method. It sure saves on our hosted resources at WebSecureStores. The video object and embed parameteres can also be adjusted to size to your page needs.

Yahoo Video also offers this option.

Here is  a live example:

We are currently using this feature on:

http://www.justnorth.com/Videos.aspx
http://www.justnorth.com/Connections/Fishing.aspx
http://www.justnorth.com/Connections/Hunting.aspx

Refreshing these pages will produce another video. We set these daily videos, using the quotes module, to seven videos at a time (a weeks worth).

The one enhancement, that I would like to see on the quotes module, is an optional paging system. If  we could add a previous and next button to the quotes module, it would be perfect.

Best regards,
Buck

Hi Buck,

I just watched your spearfishing for walleye video, very cool!

I don't see the paging enhancement on the feedback center for child links, can you put it in?

Hi Aviavia,

We have not experienced this problem on several client sites using this method. The positioning of your edit menu icon should still be visible. This method is just rendering the video within the content pane of your module.

Try mousing over the menu, then away, then mouse back over the menu. This is a little trick I have learned when a module is too close to our solpart dropdown menus.

Scott, I just wanted to take a minute to share some more ideas about the quotes module.  First, here is a link to another site of mine where I am using it:

http://www.linqdev.com

If you look at the top of the page, you will see a quote from a reviewer (look for the big comic font).  If you refresh, you should see a different review.  Obviously I am using the module for randomly generating reviews.

I think you should abstract this module a bit...make it more of a randomizer and less quote oriented.  Your templatization is so good, I would like to see you change the tokens from QUOTE and AUTHOR to something more like TOKEN1, TOKEN2, TOKEN3, TOKEN4, ....  I am not sure where it should end.  In some of my uses of the module, I have repeatedly wished it had at least 3 tokens, but the more the better.

Thanks for such a great module!  You can really tell a module is awesome when it can be used for things it wasn't really meant to be.

Is there a way to list all the quotes on one page from the database?  Allow for them to be listed in order added as well as randomized.
