In general, I was wondering if somone (Scott?) can give me a quick brief on how searching is performed in News Articles.

I have a knowledge base that I know pretty well - I entered almost all of the articles.  I aslo know how it searches - I've done some work on the Snitz search utility that was used for my old KB...

DNN SEARCH:
The DNN search is scarying me a bit.  When I type "DeBuzz Bug", I get a group of articles.  The top item - marked with the highest relevancy - does not have the word bug in it at all.  There are 3 articles that have "DeBuzz" and "bug" in it.  They end up as 3, 4 and 6 items in the list.  The items listed above them only has "DeBuzz" listed.

(I did re-index the site, and have no max/min set.)

Searching "bug" returned nothing.  That's a problem.

I'm looking into this at DNN but... the question is, what do you present to the core search?  The Summary?  The Article? What tables fields get searched?  Do you expose a view or stored procedure that is consumed by the core search?

News Article Search:
DeBuzz returns 9 articles - this looks good!
Bug returns 10 articles - also looks good!
DeBuzz Bug returns ZERO articles.  Hmmm... this is not good.

I'm only using the keyword search - what fields/tables does this search in?

Cheers!

It search's title, description and page details.

It doesn't split the keywords up, which is why DeBuzz Bug probably doens't return any links.

You mean all words in the search field are treated as a "quoted phrase"?

Yes, not ideal, so it should be changed.

Right... web-site users will not realize this and if they type two words in, there is a high-probablity, that they will render search "useless".

Unless they are lucky! ;-)

Cheers!

Just a further comment.  I was comparing DNN seaches as well, and started having problems with short word searches.  (3-4 characters long.  Anyone using DNN 4.3.5 should probably know about this problem.

See here:

Gemini DNN Bug-Base: Search Does Not Find Anything 3 Characters Long

Cheers!

Yes, I will be changing how it works to split the words up.

Thanks for posting the link, I wasn't aware of that issue.
