I'm having an issue with email settings, and I presume, SMTP.

On my portal, which uses verified registration, only people who have email addresses on my domain are getting the verification emails. Anyone with a yahoo.com or hotmail.com, or anything that is NOT my domain, do not get it.

My email server is webmail.mysite.com

Only email addresses that end in mysite.com are getting the emails. No one else is.

I've tried changing the SMTP settings on my portal, switching from basic to NTLM, but nothing has worked.

Does anybody have any ideas? I've been banging my head against a wall for weeks.

I think this has something to do with your SMTP server, I would contact your host about it. If it's not configured right, then some recipients would block the email.

Bumping this up for some new developments... I still have not been able to figure out how to get DNN to send emails to addresses that are NOT on my doman.

However, I am using DataSprings module, Opt-In Newsletter, which I have set up to send emails using my email server. It works completely fine. People who are not on my domain receive the newsletter and its sent from my domain.

So I am still back at square one trying to figure out why DNN won't send out verification emails.

Does anyone who works with email servers have any idea what the issue could be?

Do you get any email notifications about undelivered mails, or do you get nothing?

If you have access to the email server, it would be good to look at the logs to see what is happening..

Scott, with PORTAL A, I do get verifications as the admin that someone has registered for my site. But that user who signed up, did not get the verification emails. I don't get anything about undelivered emails.

with PORTAL B, I am not even getting verifications that someone has registered. Any idea what step I am missing for these emails to get sent out? When users sign up, I don't receive any emails. This one boggles me, because I obviously have it set up correctly on Portal A. ???

ok, portalB, is not a problem. I had accidentally changed the mail server settings when I was testing something. I changed it back and now I do get verifications emails when a user registers to both my sites.

But my question still remains... why can't I get my portals to send emails to other people?

I even changed my settings to a completely different webmail server and it didn't work.

Silly question, does your domain name of your portal HAVE to be the same domain as your email?
IE., myportal.com is my portal; does my email address have to be whatever@myportal.com?
Does the host of my portal HAVE to be the same host for my email?

No, the domain can be separete to the email, this is reliant on your email server, this is where the problem is likely to be. I suggest looking at the logs of your email server, to make sure the actual email is getting there to send.

Does the host of my portal HAVE to be the same host for my email?

No, these can be separate.

Who is your host? Can they help?

Well, technically, I am the host. I have control over the server that my portal is on, so I can make changes if need be. But I don't have access to the email server (which is a different domain that my portal, but you say that they can be separate) so I don't have access to the logs either. The admin tells me that it's likely it has to do with "relay settings", so it's unlikely that they will change the settings. I have another option of going with a different email host.... I just hope that it works when I set it up.

Thanks for the answers... at least I know it can be done.

If you have the SMTP settings set to a host that is not on your server, I don't think it uses relay (although I could be wrong). I thought relay was when it uses the local smtp server and relayed to another host.

To eliminate all things DNN related, I would probably load up a very simple SendEmail.asp page that just send's an email, there are plenty of scripts on the internet to do this.
