Hi Scott,

This is a suggestion for enhancing the option to only display articles to specified roles. This function is going to be very useful for providing article teasers that lead to purchasable content. There is a problem however in that clicking on secured articles doesn't provide the clicker with any further information. It just seems to load the article listing.

Users would benefit greatly from a couple of enhancements.

1. There would at the minimum be a default action that takes the visitor to the sign-in page when a secured article is clicked on - but as this could get tedious if it is not obvious which articles are for members only, I have some suggestions for tokens that would alleviate this.

2. There could be a token like [SECURED][/SECURED]. Then one would be able to put content in the visible part of the article listing indicating that an article is for subscribers or paid members.

3. There would then be a tokens for [REGISTER] and [LOGIN]. These would normally be included in the above content so that people would be directed to either register or sign in if they are already a member.

All of the above could be combined to create something along the lines of:

"Premium Content - Please sign in to read or apply for membership"

If none of the above can be done, then perhaps an alert message when someone attempts to view the article would at least inform the visitor more than is being done now?

Regards,
Rob

It does provide further detail if you specify the "Secure Url", that way you can have your own page describing why they don't have access and how to get access. This is how smallbizserver.net runs.

ahh I see. I always thought that was for putting in an SSL path for doing something fancy along those lines.

Yes.. that's excellent. It means I can send people through to the registration and sign-in page.

I still think a set of [ISSECURED][/ISSECURED] style tokens would be handy for the templates to more easily identify the articles, so please still place that under consideration at some point.

hmm.. It'd definitely be cool to be able to have a tag like "Premium Content" straight after the article title or somewhere liek that.. or one could even use the tokens to have different colours on secured articles.

I'm predicting I'll also find that I'd need to display only secured articles in the Latest Articles module.

Thanks heaps!

Has this been implemented? I agree that [ISSECURED][/ISSECURED] tokens would be handy in the listing in Latest Articles to put some graphic tag om those articles that are "Subscribers only". More flexible than just redirecting users to a custom login page.

I could not find the token suggested in the list so I guess it has not been added yet?
