I think having sub-categories would be an excellent system. Many people running a site that covers a big span of topics have issues with using one News Articles module to cover all of them.
If I had a Music, Accessories, and News column, each one would have a slew of Subcategories. E.g., Music: Pop, Hip-Hop, Accessory: Screen Protectors, Headphones, News: Rumors & Gossip, General, Hardware, etc.
In the event someone has a similar setup than the one mentioned above, they would have to result to running multiple News Articles modules. Some issues are detailed below with some resolutions on how to resolve them.
:: ISSUES ::
<b>Archives Module</b> The Archives Module currently does not support filtering, so they would need an entire new News Articles module to get the Archives module to archive & filter a specific subject. E.g., Music Archive, News Archive, Accessories Archive. Currently, it will archive the entire content of the News Articles module and achieving a filtered archive is impossible unless using multiple News Articles.
<b>Scalability/Vast Categories of different subject matter</b> - News Articles does not support sub-categories. Larger scale sites need to resort to running multiple instances of News Articles modules for different categories that would need/have subcategories.
<b>Syndication System & Page</b> - Running multiple News Articles modules would make the Syndication section have problems. On the Syndication page, the '25 Latest Articles' RSS feed would only display the last 25 of only one module - Not all of them. Hence, a user would be missing content that are from the other News Articles modules. - The Syndication page that is generated will not display all Categories because it will only display those of one News Articles module.
<b>Impratical Usage</b> - If Administrators wanted to create a new article, they would have to resort to directing themselves to the page where the News Articles module is implemented. This would cause an unconventional method of updating. There are ways to resolve this through means of hard-coding performed by the user, but this would just further suggest that sub-categories would be ideal.
<b>Search</b> - The built-in Search function would not function properly if one had used multiple News Articles modules since Search will only display and actually search its own modules, not any others that you may have.
:: SOLUTION ::
- All of the above can be resolved by implementing Sub-Categories.
- For the 'Archives Module' dilemma highlighted above, the Archives module would need to have a filtering capability much like the 'Latest Articles' module where you can specify Categories to filter in the 'View Options' sections.

Very well written mr_dimsum . I am having the same problem right now. I installed NA for every category and it is confusing everyone. I need this so bad I am willing pay beside subscriptions to get this sub categories feature.
One more problem not mentioned here is that if we want to upgrade our NA module we will have to do that for every NA instances. My site may reuire more than 50 installs of NA. Scott please cosider this feature in next version.

Multi-categories + sub-categories isn't an easy implementation - this is why it hasn't been implemented previously.
However, I'll be implementing over the next few weeks

Does it also support multi-categories? Property agent supports hierarchical categories/types as well.

Yes it does support multi-categories and subcategories and displays it in a treeview control. You can see it here: http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Resources/Knowledge/DotNetNukeOnlineHelp/tabid/787/Default.aspx
But it is not SEO friendly though.
