it would be nice to be able to rate images, having this feature as a setting for admins to turn on /off at their leisure

Well, if comments and ratings were generalized, away from just News Articles, and made like a separate control that could be 'attached' to a module, you could add comments and ratings to *any* module...

I'm not sure why someone would want ratings for a photo album or photos? What is the value here? Most albums have 20+ photos & a full/mature gallery module has 500+ photos.
What users are going to bother rating all of these photos? Family members? Church members? Sports teams? Community users? I don't know of many or any use cases where someone would want to display ratings. Unless the webmaster just want to have something 'cool'.
The only thing I can think of is for large, commercial websites who's main focus is on photos. And then if that is the case, I would think you would want a different module other than simple gallery.
I would not see this as a "simple" gallery feature. But looks like ppl want it.....

I agree with koskimake.
It should be the intent of the SimpleGallery to keep bloated features to a minumum. I question the value add for rating images (no offense to sboyette!).

I do want ratings tokens available, but they must be accompanied by RSS feeds so that one can pull out images that have been rated highly or badly. Otherwise there is no value to the rest of the web site.
The same goes for comments... they must be RSS'able

And also agree with aavaa.. that ratings and comments would ideally be a seperate core item that could be added at will to any module.

I like robax's RSSable thoughts: which would add a lot of flexability to displaying the phots (best, >good, etc) seperately.
It would be almost perfect to have ratings and comments in a core module that then allowed agregating of all content from the site (as robax and aavaa mentioned).

Comments / Ratings are an important feature. Think of how many Hot-or-Not type sites out there are that use this type of feature. Any time you can get users to generate content for you, it is a very good thing. This should be #1 on the list for next feature to implement in my opinion.

Ratings and comments are the only thing lacking at this point. Of course the ability to turn on/off these features would be good too. To me, bloat is a word to use for useless features. Do you think YouTube is bloated? Ratings and comments make it great!
