I would like the the creator of an album to be able to specify a "view" password for an album. This way, the album creator can determine who sees the album by only providing the "view" password to people they want to give access.

This would be excellent for any photographic websites - the module could then be used to provide secure proofs for photo shoots!

rather than put a password on the album i would LOVE to be able to allow users to view/update albums based on role membership.

The benefit of a view password is that it will allow the album owner to regulate access to a specific album even if the viewer is not a member of the portal.

i think this is a great idea, however the ability to turn it off for those that dont like it should be available. i vote yes.

I second this: rather than put a password on the album i would LOVE to be able to allow users to view/update albums based on role membership.
Although I would take the simple access code suggestion too.

Unfortunately role membership is almost useless as a way to control access to an album for anonymous users. A user has to be a registered member of your portal to belong to a role (Anonymous users can only belong to the anonymous role). Let's say one of my users want to set up a family album but only allow their friends and family to see it. First, their friends/family will have to sign up to the portal. Then the album owner will have to add them to a special role that is specifically limited to his album.
By allowing the album owner to simply specify an album password his friends and family can view that album without going through the above rigmaroll, and without having to worry that other people (anonymous or not) can view it. So basically, an album password will make it incredibly easy for people to restrict access to their albums to people who have no reason to sign up to the portal other than viewing that album.

I think both the option of passwords and roles are valid.
I have blog/photos sites that we are setting up for customers that want it each way. Some want just to allow their friends or relatives to be able to register (sort of a personal community) and see all their content.
Of course some want the same thing but be able to restrict to family members only. Some even want to show images to only some family members. A manual solution is to create separate roles for each (friend, immediate family, extended family, etc). Then publish albums for each. Unfortunately, this requires loading some pics for each category, increasing the management of the photos.
It would be nice to have role control at each album/sub album so that you could segregate the photos into sub albums. Immediate family could see everything (all the sub albums), extend family could see more (some sub albums), and friends could see just a few.
Just a thought.

I'd prefer the role based security.

The role based security is much easier to adminstrate.

I'd like to see this ability provided to Smart-Thinker UserGroups as well as roles ... so someone can invite friends in a self-created UserGroup to upload images into an album

In reference to my previous comment, DNN is already administrator-heavy and community-member weak ... let's put some of the load on them!

Are Smart-thinker UserGroups actual roles?

It's a quick'n easy way to protect certain albums without forcing users to become members...

Password protection for an album (and sub-albums) got my vote (useful for anonymous users). Additionall I will like to have a small module with just a textbox that ask for the 'password' and then jump directly to the album. Very common in Photographer's websites

Take a look to www.pbase.com the password protection is very usefull for anonymous users (most of the cases for photographers)
