Simple Gallery Update
By smcculloch @ 7:43 AM :: 720 Views :: 10 Comments :: Module Development

Over the past few days, I've spent a great deal of time refactoring the code within Simple Gallery. It is now much simpler to maintain and enhance.

Some of the enhancements include:-

  • A new "tagging" engine
  • Reworked "Add New Photo" screen using SWFUpload for a great progress bar (No longer have a need for multiple file upload!).
  • Create a default album when adding Simple Gallery to a page.
  • Reworked top menu bar
  • And many more minor enhancements.

I hope to also include Ray's editor to allow bulk editing of photos.

I'm half way through SWFUpload (have it working inside DNN, just need to customise now). The rest are done with the exception of Ray's editing.

As for the UpdatePanel, I'm wondering if everyone one has AJAX on their servers now, what do you think?

Ant chance we'll see user comments in an upcoming release for the gallery? It's my number one request from users.

i think your Ventrian subscribers are probably more technical than average DNN user. it's been ~9months since ms ajax release -- i believe a high percentage of people have ajax installed. of course there's going to be those people running legacy DNN systems. at some point you're going to have to revisit your support policy and embrace the newer technology.

i vote yes for UpdatePanel -- and also user comments :)

I think breaking changes are fine every now and then... consider them to be major point releases. "Super Gallery 3.0" if you will... and then you can also repackage it for sale as a virtually new product on Snowcovered. It's important to make your product range look like it's taking big steps forward when it really is doing so.

All that really matters is that existing content can remain in place or can be imported into the new module. And for those who choose to stay on the previous version, that there is an assurance that significant bugs or security issues will be patched for a specific period byeond the new release... e.g. Simple Gallery 2.x will be supported for 6 months after the release of 3.0

Personally I like to update and move with the times, but I'm aware a lot of people also like to stay put and avoid change.

Ajax is great (must have loading.gifs or users think it's not working) - and I'm concerned that my portal is filling up with so many different versions of it.... Prefer to stick with the core version.
