Corporate Identity

Can anyone recommend a good company to help design my corporate identity for my company ventrian? Part of the re-design of this site will include a migration of the www.smcculloch.net brand and move to my companies brand of www.ventrian.com. Basically I need assistance in developing a logo and a possible colour scheme.
It will be a gradual move and the old domain will continue to work. The move to my companies brand will help me to bring additional programmers aboard (when needed) and help when dealing with corporate customers that can be a little bit "iffy" on a 1 developer's site. |

I actually am considering using Speerio for a future design as I like his style. I'm sure you've probably heard of www.templatemonster.com.
From my experience with graphic designers, they are all different. So you don't necessarily go with the one with the best recommendation. Check out all their portfolios and go with the one who has some sites that look like the style you want. And make sure you get that specific developer (recommend going with a one person company for this reason).
With logo work, get involved in the process and make sure they do a lot of quick prototypes for you first to get an idea of the style you want. I would recommend finding a handful of logo styles you like to show the artist.
Also realize some designers are incapable of doing anything really good and never will be as they lack the artistic talent. So be sure to check their portfolio thoroughly and note where they created their own icons, graphics or such.

This is one the most difficult things to decide. What the other contributor wrote is 100% correct. You must be 100% excited about the design and _you_ must believe that this fits the way _you_ want the company to communicate. Logo and desgin are very important for the image of a company. Just last week I asked my graphics designer to come up with logos for the Silver, Gold and Premium subscriptions on my site. It must be very recognizable. I have also asked for ads to be designed once the subcription part is launched. Again _you_ must feel happy and comfortable with the design. Don't let any designer tell you that 'this or that is the the best'. It is your company!

I believe that you have a good starting piont as you said: "logo and (a possible) colour scheme". Colors, hue, lightness, brightness and intensity, velour and combination of colours makes the sensation resulting from stimulation of the retina of the eye by light waves of certain lengths ... ... so when choosing colours and their combination you must think of the effect that they will produce in the eyes (and minds) of the visitors of yours site, therefore you must dive in to depth of your own mind and soul to find out what kind of feelings this will produce, and what kind of people do you want to have on your site(obviously this is not yet a marketing approach). On the other hand "logo" is something opposite to the colours. Logo has more practical effect on viewer and it has to send quick and simple message connecting associative and practical engagement of viewers mind. It is mostly shalow effect and it better only makes you smile. If you like marketing approach (as in the lightness of yours latest blogs one can presume) then all this above don't have very much sense, and that is a business question and business answer as well. So you can have anyone in the world to work with and do not fear as long as you have the right and power to decide.

I've used Design Outpost for a few logos. I've been extremely happy about the work they've done for me. The process is very iterative and you will feel in control.

Scott, what about some of your fellow core team members? I've always liked Salar's stuff but I'm not sure if he goes as far as doing logos.

Scott, I purchased my DNN skin from Salar and I had an online outfit design my logo. I think they did a fantastic job. You can see my logo at www.quercussolutions.com. The design company was www.logodesignguru.com and the total cost was about $200 U.S. for the basic package.

Personally I try to design all my graphics myself. Where I admit this can result in some slightly dodgy designs (well, from other's points of view) it does mean that it is a true reflection of what I want to put forward. I've seen some very dodgy designs from professional companies, I'd certainly recommend going to someone who you know has designed logos and schemes that you yourself have liked. At the end of the day, you are the customer and it is your final say in the matter.

Scott,
The other web admin and I have used Tyler Fawcett from the following website http://tf.johndcooper.com/ .
We used him for our current skin at http://www.pokerskills.org as well as our redesigned skin (which is in the works).
He did the logo work for us. Both the website name and the cards to the far right at the very top.

One thing to remember is the 'offline' world. Make sure the logo and look transforms well into print (eg Invoices, Letterhead, Business Cards) and also if run through one of those things called a fax machine.

You dont seem to have a problem with the corporate identity. The logo gives a very strong, solid corporate perception - well done with it.
