A lot of my customers dislike the real estate that the top command bar
takes up, I always thought that preview mode when activate should
shrink the entire bar, just to a small sentance, what do you think?

Completely agree. Just doesn't make sense to have an entire control panel showing just because the user has edit rights on a particular page. The majority of the time, these users wouldn't be editing data anyway.
IMO, the control panel (and module actions) shouldn't be shown at all unless the user chooses to show them.
I've created a small inconspicous skin object here at work which toggles the control panel / preview mode.
In Preview Mode -> Control panel hidden
Not In Preview Mode -> Control panel shown.
I'll make it available in a few days when I get a chance.
