Simple Gallery offers two methods of thumbnail display.

Proportion thumbnails are the default mode and will scale thumbnails to a maximum width or height (whichever gets hit first), keeping thumbnails in scale.

Often a proportion thumbnail may look messy as some images are naturally tall and others wide. The square thumbnail will crop an image if it doesn't conform to a squared image. This page contains square images, clicking on any will show the complete image uncropped.
