IMHO - Shout Box has a lot of potential as a chat module. It is very difficult to find a solid DNN chat module.

What I really like about it is the fact that it stores posts in the database vs. cache. The benefit is the ability to create a transcript after a shout session. I suppose others will say that you sacrifice speed.

I sure hope this module gets ported to DNN 3XXX

If it only had the following features:

1. More configuration options

-Control over CSS styles and the ability to change link text (shout)

- Options for header and footer messages

-Showing/not showing emoticons

-When clicking the emoticon it is entered into the text box (Similar to Will's Active Forum module)

-The ability to clear the module and archive existing data

-Having a command button that ran a sql select script that would bundle the posts from a shout session and packaged them for email distribution or printing.

Anybody else have some ideas? I could sure use this module right now :o)

It would also be great if you could morph this module into a live support/chat module like phpLive, Help Center Live etc... I would image it's not that great of a leap to force chatters into their own environments so that they can ony chat with an Admin/operator based on role/"department".

The only thing else would be the need for a monitoring/polling module to check for new chat requests (adding a an external hook/web service would also be great so that a Win32 app could be coded to monitor the site)...

I am designing an application, for schools, that would play a video while schools across the nation could login watch the traing video and comment via a chat module.

For my purpose, I am testing a tab that includes the Inventua Media Player module and Shout on the same tab. For good measure I added the GX-Chat 1.4 module. The GX-Chat is Flash based and relies on the Cache to store chat data.

The Shout refresh calls tend to restart the video assigned to the Inventua Media Player module. Bummer.

The GX-Chat 1.4 module does not affect the video or cause a restart.

Now if shout could use the system cache during a chat session, and you could configure the cache time, but have the ability to save a transcript to sql. hmmm...

If we had ASP.NET 2.0, I could use client side callbacks, they wouldn't cause a postback

It's a simple port, but I was going to try and improve it a little, but I think I'll just release as is and go from there. I'll get it done on the upcoming weekend.
