I upgraded to 3.1.1 from 3.0.13 and added a lot of new portals to my site (not sure which may have caused this). My users then complained that they could no longer create articles. But they only submit them every few days so not sure what I did to actually cause the problem. But it appears as if it takes FOREVER to load and thus times out or never loads. So possibly the problem has been there awhile and only after adding 30+ portals over 2 weeks did it manifest.

But I did find and delete the offending code in submitnews.ascx:

     <dnn:url id="ctlURL" runat="server" width="275" showtabs="False" showfiles="True" showUrls="False" urltype="F" showlog="False" shownewwindow="False" showtrack="False" Required="False"/>

For my system, I have 50 portals now and 2000+ tabs. My portals have several (100+ MB)  files in the portal directory as that is where I store all my user photos (is it browsing them). My website has been running DNN since May 2005 and only 2 weeks ago I upgraded to 3.1.1. I also have PortalMapper installed for sharing users across portals.

My guess is the upgrade to 3.1.1, the volume of files and/or the PortalMapper might be the culprit and does not like this code. Since I don't use the feature, I removed the code from the ascx file and then in the codebehind setup the enableimages to false. Later I realized perhaps I can disable this from an admin window.

If you have a large amount of files, then it's possible that it's a very large dropdown list and maybe this is why it takes a while to load?

Are they large files or large amounts of files?

I bet that is the problem. I don't actually know what this feature is exactly as I never used it and cannot get it to work to see how it is supposed to work. Does it automatically populate a ddl with all possible images? I do have 1000+ files, all images, in my portals subdirectories. I also have SEVERAL directories.

I probably have 400 folders and 1000 images. I only have maybe 5 pics in my root though. I also disabled my file synchronization in DNN scheduler as I didn't think I needed it. Perhaps this also could be my problem.

This is an example of how my dir structure is setup......

portals/0/memberphotos/23/1023/jason1.jpg

portals/0/memberphotos/23/1023/jason_friends.jpg

portals/0/memberphotos/23/1023/jason_car.jpg

portals/0/memberphotos/62/162/bill1.jpg

portals/0/memberphotos/08/208/kellypic.jpg

etc... etc.....

Hi Jason,

Yep, it populates a dropdown list of all files in the portal. I'll add in a config option in the next release to disable the listing of files (for sites that do not need this functionality).

If you select a file, it will link to it in the article.

Or, perhaps, a better solution might be in the host/admin config option have an option to also specify a specific image directory. That way, you can choose a folder with the exact images you want to give ppl access to choose from.

So the current option actually goes through and gets all the image files in all the directories?

I think setting the image directory is a great idea, I'll add it in for next release..
